REZE ARC is the latest anime box office success after reaching $100 million worldwide
Anime, Crunchyroll and Sony are enjoying a hot streak at the box office. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle was a huge box office success, grossing over $660 million worldwide according to a report 20 million dollars budget. Now the time has come for another anime adaptation, Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcto make a dent at the box office. A sequel to Chainsaw man anime released in 2022 (itself an adaptation of the 2018 manga “Chainsaw Man”), the feature film has enjoyed impressive critical reception, earning a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A on CinemaScore. Today, financial success matches the praise of critics.
By The Hollywood Reporterthe film opened domestically to an impressive (estimated) $17.3 million in a wide release in 3,003 theaters, beating its other opening features. Regret you ($12.9 million domestically) and Springsteen: Deliver me from nowhere ($9.1 million domestically). The film also beat Black phone 2 on his second weekend ($13 million domestically). Internationally, Chainsaw man raked in $43.1 million, bringing its international traffic to $90.7 million. Associated with its opening in the United States, Chainsaw man has now earned around $108 million worldwide.
To put things into perspective with a cinematic adaptation of a slightly more mainstream anime, that of 2022 Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes brought approximately 20 million dollars nationally during its opening weekend. Although there is no precise worldwide box office figure for Superheroits total varies from 86.5 million dollars (by Box office mojo) to $97.2 million (by The numbers). Chainsaw man marks a new victory for distributors Crunchyroll and Sony, who also ensured the international distribution of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle earlier this year.
For those who don’t know Chainsaw manthe anime focuses on Denji, a young man forced to pay off his father’s debt to the Yakuza by working for them as a demon hunter. This ultimately leads to his death, but he is brought back to life by his Chainsaw Devil dog, Pochita, who also happens to be the first iteration of the Chainsaw Man. Pochita sacrifices her life to become Denji’s heart, giving him a new life coupled with the power to transform parts of his body into chainsaws.
At this year’s New York Comic Con in October, Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc Assistant director Masato Nakazono discussed (VIA THR) the challenges of adapting the manga to film format:
“There are no words between panels, so we have to create that and make sure the dialogue is going to hold. The characters Reze and Denji have a very personal and intimate relationship. Denji thinks Reze is so cute, so we wanted to do things that made the audience feel the same way Denji did.”
