No. 7 Denver Falls 1-0 at Northeastern

BOSTON- The No. 7 Denver Pioneers hockey team dominated the Northeastern Huskies by a margin of 35-14, but lost 1-0 Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
DU (3-2-1) finished its four-game road season going 1-1-0 in the Boston area after winning 7-3 at No. 9 Boston College on Friday in Chestnut Hill. Denver finished the road game with an overall record of 2-2-0, as the Huskies were rested and waiting for the Pioneers since they had not played the previous night.
Lawton Zacher earned the shutout in net for NU (3-1-0, 1-0-0 HEA), while Denver’s freshman netminder Quentin Miller stopped 13 of 14 shots in his third consecutive start.
Amine Hajibi scored the only goal of the night, completing a cross-court pass from Griffin Erdman in the slot at 2:17 of the second period.
The Pioneers outscored the Huskies 11-2 in the first period, 15-7 in the second and 9-5 in the third. DU finished with a 68-32 advantage in total shot attempts.
Denver went 0-for-2 on the power play and killed its solitary advantage. DU is now 12 for 12 on the penalty kill this season.
DU won 57.6 percent of faceoffs, going 34 of 59 at the point.
Denver was playing at Matthews Arena for the first time since October 16, 2004 and for the final time as the world’s oldest multi-purpose arena closes in December.
FOLLOWING: The Pioneers return to Magness Arena for Homecoming Weekend against Alaska Anchorage on October 31 and November 1.

POST-GAME NOTES

  • DU finished 9-4-0 all-time at Matthews Arena and 6-4-0 against Northeastern in the building. The Pioneers won the 1960 national championship against Michigan Tech at the rink then known as Boston Arena.
  • Denver is now 16-3-1 in its last 20 non-conference outings and 10-3-0 against Hockey East opponents since the start of the 2023-24 season.
  • The Pioneers’ nine-game winning streak against the Huskies dating back to November 25, 1994 came to an end. DU is 17-6-0 overall against NU.
  • Goalkeeper That of Quentin Miller The unbeaten streak at the start of the season came to an end (2-0-1).
  • James Reeder played in his 50th career game, becoming the first member of Denver’s sophomore class to reach the half-century mark.
  • Denver held Northeastern to just two shots on goal in the first half, the fewest by any opponent in any period this season. It was the least since DU also allowed only two shots on goal in the second period on October 5, 2024 at Alaska Anchorage.
  • Clarke Caswell saw its season-opening point streak end at five games (2g/4a).
  • Samu Salminen streak of four consecutive games with at least one point (2g/2a), and Hagen Terriers (2g/5a), Garrett Brown (0g/3a) and Jake Fisher (3g/2a) career-long point streaks also ended in four games.
