Reporter stands outside Ibrox and highlights Rangers manager’s twist ’11th hour 59th minute’

Danny Rohl is set to be named Rangers’ new boss, and Sky Sports have shared a live update from outside Ibrox after an ’11th hour and 59th minute’ twist.

Rangers close to Rohl announcement after late breakdown in talks

“Let’s start with the huge developments of the last half hour”, a Sky Sports presenter said live on television on Monday afternoon. “Danny Rohl should be named Rangers’ new head coach.”

The 36-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday head coach ruled himself out of the race to become Russell Martin’s successor last week when Kevin Muscat appeared to be the favourite.

However, it emerged on Sunday evening that no deal could be reached with Muscat, leaving the Ibrox club in a managerial void ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Brann in Norway.

Sky’s Adam Binnie has now reported live from outside Ibrox, highlighting just how close they came to appointing Muscat: “The club continued its advanced discussions with Kevin Muscat which failed at the 11th hour, i.e. in the 11th hour and 59th minute..

“After all this arguing, Rohl was back in the race…he is now the leading candidate and should take over.”

Rohl, who Binnie said was third choice after Steven Gerrard and Muscat, led the Owls to a 12th-place finish in the league in his only full season as manager before leaving the struggling Yorkshire club in July.

Rangers Under-19s boss Stevie Smith was in caretaker charge for the 2-2 draw against Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday. Former Gers defender Smith returned to first-team training with B-team coach Brian Gilmour, goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo and performance manager Rhys Owen, following Martin’s departure.

The Ibrox club sit sixth in the William Hill Premiership with nine points from eight matches and are 13 points behind leaders Hearts.

Gers fans unhappy with Martin’s failure, the start to the season in which Rangers were also knocked out of the Champions League play-offs thanks to a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Belgian side Club Brugge, and latterly the new boss’s recruitment process, have turned on chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

A banner was held up at half-time during the Dundee United match which read: “Stewart, Thelwell, pack your bags and leave before we pack them for you”.
