Reddit wants to be a real search engine

Reddit plans to unify its traditional site research and the “Reddit Answers” tool and give it a more important placement on the site and mobile applications. The company hopes to become more a first destination for information research, instead of Google or other search engines are held on the way.
The company is actively based on the explosive growth of its tool powered by AI, replies Reddit. The plan is to fully unify the basic REDDIT research function, which already has more than 70 million weekly users, with the Reddit Answers tool.
Unfortunately, this means that Reddit will probably harass you with research on the AI directly on the home page. This is very similar to the preview of Google AI, except that Google sometimes gets its information from credible sites that do research, while a lot of reddit comes from opinions and assumptions. A common meme is that if you post a question about Reddit asking for an expert or a professional, many of your comments start with “not a [professional] But ‘and then the best supposition or an experience.
However, it may not be a big change in relation to Google’s search. A Semrush study said that Reddit is now the second most cited source in the summaries generated by Google. Reddit may not like it, because if it is good to be linked in the preview of the AI, it’s a bit of a double -edged sword.
Google’s new glimpses of AI giving direct answers and summaries, so that users no longer feel the need to click on the original source. This cannibalization of traffic is a huge risk, and some new sites have dropped to Google research traffic after the launch of functionality. This is perhaps the reason why Reddit wants to move away from the use by Google and have its own research.
If you have never used it, the AI tool responds to Reddit makes concise summaries and gives direct responses of discussions on the platform instead of using keywords to find a discussion. Although it gives you a summary, it goes back to the original threads, so that you can get the full context if you wish.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman explained: “We unified those [Reddit search and Reddit Answers] In a single research experience, and we will bring this front and to the center of the application. Thus, whether you are a new user opening the application for the first time or a dismissal user opening the application, this research area will be present immediately. »»
Huffman clarified quite clearly during the Conference Conference of the second quarter of Reddit that the company considers that it is one of the few platforms positioned to become a “real research destination”. It is because of “the extent of conversations and knowledge that you cannot find anywhere else”.
Reddit seems to have moved to this goal for some time. The company has updated its web protocols to give paid partners exclusive access while blocking competitors like Microsoft’s Bing. It therefore seems that Reddit does not want to continue to be where you are, but instead of the search engine with which you start.
