Intrigued by the recent Louvre robbery? Then this Netflix crime thriller is your next watch

This weekend saw one of the most brazen heists in history, when thieves made off with nine of France’s crown jewels from Le Lourve in broad daylight. The sheer audacity of the crime, combined with the fact that the thieves chose what is arguably one of the worst times to pull off a heist, is what makes this story worth watching. If the world wanted a more interesting heist story set in Francehe could always return to the hit Netflix detective series, Lupine.

Lupine takes its name and premises from the stories of Arsène Lupine from Maurice Leblancto the point that the protagonist Assane Diop (Omar Sy) is modeled on the gentleman thief. Assane’s approach isn’t just about cool aesthetics. After his father, Babakar, was framed and left to die in prison by the wealthy Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre), Assane seeks to bring down Pellegrini.

Lupine sets its stakes pretty high during its opening episode, which stages a major robbery at Lourve. Assand not only makes his way into Lourve, but he also manages to outwit a group of loan sharks who tried to double-cross him and comes away with an almost priceless diamond necklace. This is just one example of the thrills that await viewers, as Assand must often use his intelligence and skills to stay one step ahead of the Pellegrini family and the relentless detective Youssef Guédira (peace society), who understood that Assand was inspired by Lupin.

Ironically, Omar Sy wanted to play Lupine himself before being convinced by the showrunners. George Kay And François Uzan to switch to a Lupine-inspired character. The bet succeeded, as Sy revealed it allowed him to address issues of race and inequality in France. “The character had to be a modern-day Frenchman,” Sy said. Rolling stone. “That’s why we have a black man of African origin who lives in the cities. He’s a new face of France.”

These problems highlight Lupinehistory, especially when it comes to Assand’s personal life. His father, a Sengelase man, was sentenced to prison while the rich, white Pellegrinis continued to amass their fortunes. In addition to this, Assand also has his ex-wife Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) and his son Raoul whom he must take care of; The kidnapping of Raoul animates the second part of Lupineresulting in a bittersweet moment where Assand must flee to protect his family. These issues separate Lupine other heist stories, and it’s well worth the detour.

“Lupin” has become one of Netflix’s biggest international hits

When Lupine first premiered on Netflix in 2021, it was a resounding success. Not only Lupine rival The Bridgerton Chronicles in number of viewers, but for a time, it was the most watched series on Netflix. It also debuted on Netflix’s International Top 10 when Part 3 premiered in 2023. Critical reception was also glowing, praising Sy’s “magnetic” performance and how the series played out like a feature film rather than a television series.

Lovers of Lupine will have the chance to see more of their favorite thief in action when the series returns for part 4. No release date has been set, but the series is expected to resume after the explosive ending of part three, where Assand voluntarily went to prison to save his family. Whatever happens next, Lupine will undoubtedly continue to showcase Omar Sy’s incredible charisma while delivering the kind of thrills we only see in films like Ocean Eleven Or Heat. Breaking bad has rarely been so beautiful.
