With the IPL2026 With the mini-auction ending on December 16, discussions around title contenders have accelerated. An Indian veteran who adds weight to the debate Ravichandran Ashwin shared his predictions for the four teams most likely to reach the semi-finals next season. Drawing on his experience as both a player and a keen observer, Ashwin highlighted team stability, smart bidding strategies and player availability as decisive elements in shaping his top four.

5-time champions top Ravichandran Ashwin’s picks

Ashwin named Mumbai Indians (MI) as their first choice to qualify for the semi-finals of IPL 2026. The five-time champions entered the auction with a strong core already in place, having retained the majority of their key players ahead of the auction. According to Ashwin, this continuity gives MI a clear advantage over other franchises still seeking balance.

He also praised MI’s auction approach, highlighting its ability to attract quality players without excessive spending. The acquisition of Quinton de Kock for a modest INR 1 crore stood out as a particularly wise move, adding experience and firepower to the top of the order. Confident in their overall structure, Ashwin remarked in a video shared by the franchise that Mumbai are almost certain to be among the top teams when the season comes to an end.

“I think MI will get there, for sure” Ashwin said in a video shared by Mumbai Indians on social media.

Conditional place of reigning champions

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were Ashwin’s second choice, although his support came with significant strings attached. While recognizing the strength of their retained core and their smart recruiting, including the addition of Venkatesh IyerAshwin pointed out that RCB’s fortunes would heavily depend on the fitness of the players.

He particularly emphasized the importance of Josh Hazlewoodphysical condition and availability of a left arm pacemaker Yash Dayal. Ashwin suggested that if both bowlers remain fit and available throughout the season, RCB has every chance of making a third consecutive playoff appearance. However, any disruption on this front could significantly affect their campaign.

Shreyas Iyer-led team wins trust of veteran player

Ashwin also supported Kings of Punjab (PBKS)last season’s runner-up, will compete in the semi-finals of IPL 2026. Like MI and RCB, PBKS has focused on retaining its core group, ensuring stability within the team under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. Ashwin felt that this continuity, combined with targeted additions at the auction, made them a complete team.

The inclusions of Ben Dwarshuis And Cooper Connolly added depth and flexibility to Punjab’s lineup, strengthening both their bowling resources and all-round options. Ashwin noted that Punjab, alongside Mumbai, seemed to have assembled one of the most balanced teams ahead of the new season.

“I believe RCB will do well again. Punjab Kings, unless of course RCB don’t have Hazlewood or probably they don’t have the services of Yash Dayal, then I don’t know where they will be placed but I think Punjab and Mumbai have put together good teams,” » added Ashwin.

Former champions complete the top four

To complete his list, Ashwin chose Rajasthan Royals (RR)a franchise he previously represented. Admitting that his opinion had evolved over time, Ashwin praised the Royals for putting together what he described as a “very good team”. He felt that RR’s overall team composition, blending youth and experience, could make them a strong contender for IPL 2026. According to Ashwin, their planning and execution during the auction reflected a clear vision, positioning them well to challenge for a semi-final berth.

“I have a slightly different opinion than I had some time ago and I think it’s the Rajasthan Royals. They cooked up a very good side dish together,” Ashwin signed.
