Ranji Trophy: Arjun Tendulkar holds on as Goa fight back against Karnataka | Cricket News

Shivamogga: The sun barely made an appearance here on Monday, but the cloudy skies suited the Karnataka bowlers very well as their four-pronged attack spit fire in the first two sessions of play. However, try as they might, this attack could not break the defenses of Arjun Tendulkar (43 batting) and Mohit Redkar (24 not out), who put together an unbeaten 56-run partnership for the seventh wicket, a stand that halted Karnataka’s inexorable march towards the lead in the first innings of this Ranji Trophy match. On another day of reduced weather at the KSCA Navule Stadium here, Goa’s subpar resistance dulled the shine of Karnataka’s fine bowling. In response to the home side’s first innings score of 371, Goa reached 171/6 in 77 overs, still 200 runs short and 50 short of the follow-on when poor light ended play. An hour’s play was lost in the morning due to a wet outfield, and only 64 overs were bowled on the third day.
Given Karnataka’s tryst with the weather of late, a victory seems unlikely. Three points from this outing looks much more likely, but that might not be enough given that Karnataka managed just one point in their first match and have sterner tests ahead. The new-ball pair of Vidwath Kaverappa (2/30) and Abhilash Shetty (3/63) started cheerfully enough, making the most of the conditions. They extracted movement from the box and played according to a plan and with purpose. The fusion of experience and youth worked well for the hosts as the duo played out the first 13 overs of the day between them. Resuming on 28/1, Goa’s first order appeared positive in the face of this difficult examination, but the resistance quickly faded. Suyash Prabhudssais added a single run to his overnight score of 11 before he edged a full delivery from Kaverappa to wicketkeeper KL Shrijith. Most of Goa’s top-order and middle-order batters were run out by the rising ball, with skipper Snehal Kauthankar being no exception. He stole Abhilash from Shrijith. When Kaverappa got Abhinav Tejrana’s number, caught by Nikin Jose at the slips, Goa were in disarray at 51/4. Lalit Yadav and Darshan Misal then held the innings together, facing 150 deliveries for 49 runs. When Misal, whose 12-run stand came off 84 deliveries, tried to break free, he sent only a delivery from Yashovardhan Parantap to Karun Nair at first over. Lalit Yadav’s unwelcome firing also ended his vigil.Arjun and Redkar then took center stage, with half-chances and a few frustrating missed chances. Mayank Agarwal & Co. While caution was required, stray balls, like a short one from Abhilash to Arjun, were not spared. Karnataka is hoping that the weather will be good on the last day.DASHBOARD Karnataka (I inning): 371 Goa (I innings; y/n 28/1): Manthan Khutkar c Shrijith b Abhilash 9, Suyash Prabhudssais c Shrijith b Kaverappa 12, Abhinav Tejrana c Jose b Kaverappa 18, Snehal Kauthankar c Shrijith b Abhilash 10, Lalit Yadav c Parantap b Abhilash 36, Darshan Misal c Karun b Parantap 12, Arjun Tendulkar (batting) 43, Mohit Redkar (batting) 24.
