Rangers now considering older alternative to Rohl who wants to bring 4-4-2 to Ibrox
Following Steven Gerrard’s frustrating decision, Rangers are reportedly looking for a new name to replace the sacked Russell Martin at Ibrox.
Latest Rangers manager searches
It seemed almost certain it was Gerrard. The Liverpool legend told Rio Ferdinand all about his desire to return to management and talks were held with Rangers, only for their managerial search to continue after he was rejected. Back at square one, Kevin Thelwell’s miserable start to life at Ibrox shows no signs of ending and questions are already being raised around his role as sporting director.
The big question is where the Rangers go from here. After their leading candidate rejected them, the likes of Danny Rohl have already been discussed as potential alternatives.
The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has worked wonders at times in his latest role, with circumstances off the field often limiting his resources and disrupting things. Now, looking for his next coaching job, the Rangers could still call on him.
The German was a candidate before Rangers opted to hire Martin this summer, so they should know all about his expertise. However, it remains to be seen whether the Gers will choose to turn to a 36-year-old in their current situation.
The last thing the 49ers need is for their second meeting to go as poorly as the first. While Rohl is a manager full of potential, Rangers need to steady the ship first, which could see them go in another direction. If this proves to be the case, then a new name could fill the vacant position.
Rangers now eyeing Raphael Wicky
As reported by TeamTalk, Rangers are now considering a move for Raphael Wicky. The 48-year-old – 12 years Rohl’s senior – recently took charge of Young Boys from 2022 to 2024 and has maintained a points-per-game record of 1.97. This is his most impressive role, considering he became Swiss champion and cup winner during his time at the club.
Of a similar age to Gerrard and a league winner like the former Liverpool player, Wicky could come in handy and, according to Transfermarkt, would bring a 4-4-2 formation to Ibrox, with the slight modification of a diamond midfield.
There would be a feeling of the unknown, but it’s the same kind Rangers arguably had when signing an inexperienced Gerrard in 2019, before winning the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox in 2021.
As for Wicky’s system, Rangers can expect to start with two strikers under the Swiss manager, which could see departures for Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti as Gers finally aim to get their attack firing on all cylinders.
So, even if Wicky doesn’t emerge as the most well-known option, he certainly makes for an interesting candidate. He’s still developing his craft, but doesn’t lack experience as a title winner and that should give the 49ers something to consider.
