Rangers will not name Kevin Muscat as new head coach, Sky Sports News understand.
Talks between the Rangers hierarchy and Muscat were at an advanced stage but ultimately an agreement between all parties could not be reached.
Muscat are currently in charge of Shanghai Port – they are top of the Chinese Super League with the former Ibrox player trying to clinch the title.
It is understood Rangers remain in talks with other potential candidates.

News of Kevin Muscat being offered to become Rangers manager comes hours after Kris Boyd criticized the Rangers board over their process of recruiting a replacement for Russell Martin.
“There is something broken within the football club at the moment,” Boyd told Sky Sports.
“The fans are fed up, it’s been a long time since Rangers have been a successful football club.
“You expect to go and win trophies. But first and foremost, you have to win games to do that. There are a lot more problems that are deeper than the manager. Russell Martin was dismissed, you see the same things happening again.
“There is no unity between the stands and the hierarchy. We have the impression that the clubs are going in one direction. The supporters are investing their money.
“It’s not like Russell Martin is doing really well. Two weeks ago he was relieved of his duties. The five or six weeks before that were just as bad.
“Surely, for this succession plan, you have someone in place or you are already talking with someone. The long process over the last two weeks has been embarrassing for the football club.”
