Rabada Racing Time for T20 World Cup Fitness

South African pacer Kagiso Rabada failed to make MI Cape Town’s squad for two SA20 matches. The bowler is still recovering from a rib injury and is running out of time to prove his fitness.

Kagiso Rabada’s plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup have hit a snag. He has already missed MI Cape Town’s first two matches.

The defending champions began their campaign without Rabada. Captain Rashid Khan confirmed that the franchise is optimistic that Rabada could return for his third match on December 31, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Rabada stands the test of time

Rabada has limited time to prove his suitability to the selectors. South Africa are expected to announce their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup on January 2. This means the point guard may only have one competitive outing to show his body can handle the intensity of the match.

South Africa tends to be very cautious about injuries in World Cup years. Even though Kagiso Rabada’s rib problem is not considered that serious, the team management will want to avoid taking any risks.

Positive signs in training

Good news, Rabada bowled without visible discomfort during training at Newlands. He also looked relaxed while speaking to the media and said he was feeling good. The final decision will depend on medical clearance and how his body responds to the workload.

Rabada last played in October, in South Africa’s victory against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He was rested from the subsequent white-ball series and was subsequently ruled out of the India Test tour due to a rib injury.

Other rhythm options

South Africa is also exploring other pace options. Gerald Coetzee is recovering from a pectoral injury, while Nandre Burger is still unavailable after picking up an injury earlier this month.

Kwena Maphaka is back in action in SA20 after overcoming a hamstring problem. This gives South Africa another promising option as preparations for the World Cup gather pace.
