R Ashwin calls for better communication between players and management

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had last played for India in March 2025, during the Champions Trophy.
The Indian team is playing in the ODI format after a gap of seven months, after the 2025 Champions Trophy, and although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been selected for the series, there is no guarantee of clarity if they would participate in the 2027 World Cup. India will play 9 ODIs till January next year, three against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, and with them, the other two formats. there are not enough preparatory matches.

So, what was the communication between the management and Rohit & Virat? Former India player R Ashwin believes that not only should there be clear communication from the management but also from the players. Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, he said: “I hope the conversation happened between the management and Rohit & Virat (about their future)… and if that conversation happened now, why didn’t it happen after their T20I retirement.”

Ashwin added that the contribution from both batters was massive, but the message needs to be clear. If performance is what they will be judged on, in future matches they should be informed of the same. “Why is there no clear communication from the players? If the communication is not clear between the two parties, then it leaves the players in a very tender space.”
For the record, Virat Kohli has played 302 ODIs and scored 14,181 runs at an average of 58. He has 74 fifties and 51 hundreds. On the other hand, in 273 ODIs, Rohit Sharma has scored 11,168 runs at an average of 48. He has 32 tons to his name.
