Put a structure around the generator AI

Chatgpt took over the world in 2023, opening up new possibilities for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in many different industries. Health care is no exception.

The potential advantages of AI adoption in health care are important, but the risks too. Recognizing this, the OSF Innovation quickly trained a generative AI committee to supervise the safe and effective use of AI throughout the ministry.

“While we consider what it meant to effectively govern AI, we wanted to involve the right people from the start and make sure that we use their expertise to guide the process,” said Tyler Fitch, MD, director of medical computer science and the integration of OSF health care.

Governance

The OSF Innovation brought together a committee with leaders representing various divisions through the ministry. Their priorities were to establish railings for the implementation of a generative AI and to educate mission partners on what a generative is and how it can have an impact on health care.

OSF also joined 38 other payers and health care providers to align with health AI commitments. The commitments of the health AI are an effort to collaborate with the White House to create a framework for the use of AI in complete safety and responsible for health care.

The commitments of the health AI defend the use of the principles of the favorites when examining new AI technologies and that the OSF AI generator committee has adopted it. “We are committed to doing our best to find the advantages of AI, but also to prevent risks. As we have examined our governance, we wanted to make sure that we apply all these favorite principles to everything we release and approve of the OSF, “said Dr Fitch.

Implementation of new AI technologies

Although the establishment of AI generating directives is crucial, OSF also wishes to avoid unnecessary delays in the approval process to pilot or implement new technologies. The committee feared that too many additional approval layers for a generative AI would slow the implementation.

“One of the things that have gone through strong and clear is that we do not want to add a ton of general costs to the time necessary to implement technology,” said Dr Fitch. “If you have an exciting new technology that can be implemented safely, you don’t want to increase the burden to do something like that.”

OSF already has many controls and counterweights in place to implement new technologies. The Committee has made recommendations to add a few additional questions to existing documents when a new project is subject to a genetive AI. The answers to these questions can trigger an additional examination by compliance or ethics services.

Transparency

An area that could undergo a significant improvement in efficiency due to generative AI is communication between patients and doctors. The generative AI could summarize the graphic of a patient, provide models for e-mail communication or help doctors to prioritize important messages and follow-up. According to Dr Fitch, the OSF generative AI Committee identified the need for transparency when using these types of tools.

“If we are talking about a doctor-patient interaction, for example, and something that could help a doctor write a note, we will let the patient know that we are using this tool. If we have a response that has AI-assisted answers, we will let people know,” said Dr Fitch. “We want transparency on where the tools are used and an impact on things so that people are not surprised by that.”

Collaboration

Because generative AI is so new, collaboration with other health care entities has been a key objective for the OSF. Here are some of the ways in which the OSF works with other people on generative AI technology.

The OSF is part of the generative strategic collaboration of AI, an effort led by AVIA to identify the risks, opportunities and exploitable stages for responsible, impactful and ethical adoption of health care.

OSF also works with Valid AI, an organization focused on the execution which aims to fill the gap in coordinated efforts, rapidly progressing the validation and implementation of governance for a generative AI.

OSF Innovation has a long history of collaboration with university establishments and innovators to stimulate change in health care. These existing relationships offer opportunities to work together with new ways using shared expertise in a generative AI.

Dr. Fitch is enthusiastic about what these collaborations mean for the future of health care. “I think the OSF is a leader in this area. AI generative technology offers the possibility of providing expertise and resources to new innovative ideas to get good results for our patients. ”

One of the first generative AI projects for the OSF is a pilot with EPIC, the medical record system, using nuance Dax Copilot. This tool listens to patient exams and automatically takes notes, allowing suppliers to fully focus on their conversation with the patient. Instead of being distracted by the documentation, the supplier will have a complete note ready at the end of the visit. Several medical group offices participate in this test.

The generative AI should transform health care, and OSF Healthcare opens the way with thoughtful governance, effective implementation, transparency and collaboration. These efforts guarantee that generating AI benefit patients and providers while minimizing risks.
