The 50 states as well as the Columbia district and the American territories approved a regulation of $ 7.4 billion with Purdue Pharma, a manufacturer of Oxycontin, on the poor marketing of opioids.

The agreement was filed with a Federal Court of Bankruptcy by Purdue Pharma officials in March after negotiations with state prosecutors and other stakeholders. If this plan is finalized, payments will occur over the next 15 years.

In a statement, New York Attorney General, Letitia James said that the plan “would hold the Sackler family responsible” for what they described as their “leading role in the food of the dependence and opioid overdoses epidemic”.

Under the contours of the agreement, members of the Sackler family who currently have Purdue Pharma should contribute up to $ 7 billion.

According to the company, a major change compared to previous settlement agreements will mean that people who wish to continue the scacklers before the civil court for an alleged reverse will not be forced to renounce these proceedings.

“Creditors can preserve their right to take legal action against the Sacklers if they do not operate in the versions of Sackler contained in the plan,” said Purdue Pharma in a press release.

The Sacklers said on several occasions that they had done nothing wrong and had not committed any crime.

NPR has contacted Sackler family members to comment, but has not yet received an answer.

In a joint declaration sent to NPR, lawyers pursuing Purdue Pharma and the Sacklers welcomed the agreement.

“After five years of dispute and three years of bankruptcy, we are delighted that the 55 eligible states and territories have unanimously accepted to accept,” the members of the executive committee of the complainants of the opioid on national prescription.

They said the agreement would add “more than $ 7 billion in essential funds to help communities across the country” to recover from the opioid crisis.

These regulations must be approved by a Federal Court of bankruptcy. Experts say at NPR, this version of the agreement is likely to be accepted by the courts and by the United States Ministry of Justice.

The DOJ’s bankruptcy monitoring agency has challenged previous settlement attempts, leading to the decision of the United States Supreme Court to overthrow a previous bankruptcy agreement with Purdue Pharma and Sacklers in July 2024.

If it is finalized, these regulations will be added to more than $ 50 billion in opioid payments by companies that have benefited from the manufacture, distribution and detail of opioid pain relievers at a time when overdoses and deaths of drugs soar in the United States
