“ Smallville ” has obtained the best part of Superman’s original story that James Gunn’s film is very mistaken

Publisher’s note: the following contains spoilers for the James Gunn Superman

There are a few things with which some have disputed James GunnNew Superman movie. Although the film presents an excellent distribution, visuals inspired by comics and a lot of heart, the film was criticized (just like Steel man was before) for his representation of the hero’s parents, both biological and adopted. But as far as the latter is concerned, there is only one Superman adaptation which really takes its time with the Kents, exploring the supporters and outs of the priming of a child of another world and by instilling in the values of the old -fashioned Midwest that the character would embrace for the years to come. Yes, we are talking about Smallvilleand the representation of the show by Jonathan and Martha Kent, played masterfully by John Schneider And Annette O’Tooleis the best there is, bar none.

If there is one thing Smallville It really raises the material, it is the inclusion of Jonathan and Martha Kent. In a film like SupermanIt is difficult to get the full image of who are really the kents. Of course, the film obtains the basic idea that Jonathan and Martha (played by Pruitt Taylor Vince And Neva Howellrespectively) are the parents to support their superhero son. The final scene where David CorenswetThe steel man is seen watching films at the Maison des Trois in his fortress is magnificent, but it is a bit hollow. A little incomplete. To be fair, the execution of 2 hours is nothing compared to several seasons of equipment. It was during a decade Smallville This audience has learned to better understand the benevolent farmers who have established the foundations on which the man of steel is built. During the first five seasons in particular, the Kents guided the young Clark (Tom Welling) Through each of his new trials, powers and emotional struggles when he took care of the news of his inheritance and the questions that brought to his life.

Indeed, The show has revolutionized the role of kents in the superman media liveThis makes it the grounding force of Clark’s morality and lead to serve and protect those around it. This does not mean that their inclusion in films like Richard give‘s Superman or shows like Laws & Clark: the new adventures of Superman were not effective (they were), but SmallvilleJonathan and Martha were a cup over the others and inserted themselves into Clark’s heroism in a way that others had not previously had. Smallville Craft of individuals who not only have engaged in the world changing around them, but who adapted to navigate there for the good of their son.

Unlike many adaptations of the life of the steel man as a costumed hero, The prequel series Jonathan and Martha Square in the middle of the actionEach of them going many lengths to protect Clark and his secret. They even pursue political functions in order to be a step ahead of any interference or investigation of the government on their son. Throughout the show, there is very little that Jonathan and Martha will not do or sacrifice in order to protect Clark from a world that would otherwise use it and mistreat it. We see it especially in Jonathan’s clear distrust of the Luthor family, and even if Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is one of Clark’s most favorable friends at the start, Kent Patriarch sees their family’s darkness in a way that Clark refuses for years. Superman Simply has no time for all of this.

Jonathan and Martha were described as real people with real problems on “Smallville”

The role of the Kents in the series was so vital, so important, that without his parents in his life, Clark struggled to reconcile with his destiny without them. It is only with their help and influence, even beyond the grave, that Clark could become Superman-and it is a powerful role to play in the life and education of the first superhero in the world. But more than simply being an inspiration and a hand guidance towards Clark’s life, Jonathan and Martha are represented as complex and complex people. They are fighting for Martha’s work with Lionel Luthor (John Glover) Despite the fact that they need money. They find it difficult to reach both ends while competing with Luthorcorp. Jonathan is struggling with a problem of anger that ends up facing his death in the 100th episode, “Reckoning”, and Martha’s reluctance to see the Lutors for whom they are really wreaking havoc until it is proven the opposite.

This contrasts strongly with Superman. While the versions of Vince and Howell certainly do not approve Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), they do not offer much to the steel man other than a few kind words and a place to put the head. Jonathan can’t even remember laws’ (Rachel Brosnahan) name, which is something that SmallvilleJonathan would have been proud to base himself solely on the principle.

At different times, the series gave the Kents Powers, pushed them to relations with Jor-el (Stamp), and placed them in the hands of the Lutors – all in an effort to help push Clark towards his destiny. Jonathan and Martha had to make difficult decisions to prevent Clark from being discovered, But they also had to make difficult personal choices to guarantee the life they loved. Martha gave up a promising career for Jonathan (to his father’s great disappointment) and Jonathan often lived in constant paranoia that someone would one day come for his son. Schneider and O’Toole play these characters so perfectly, so perfectly, that they gave life to Kents in a way that most could not understand before seeing them on the screen. It’s not surprising Mark Waid would use SmallvillePA and my Kent as his model for their characters (both physically and psychologically) in his beloved Superman: Drive of birth Original story.

“ Smallville ” offered nuances to Kents that “Superman” has trouble transmitting

What has always been so great SmallvilleThe first years are that, although Clark looks at his parents as his ultimate moral standard (and perhaps rightly), the trio is also able to navigate their own personal shortcomings. There are many times when Jonathan is in pain, and he is forced to make his words or actions. While PA and my Kent are traditionally considered as paragones of hope, morality and good old values (something James Gunn comes down to his essence Superman),, Smallville Take these ideas and flow with them in a way that proves that they are always human, just like Superman.

All the kindness, the compassion and the responsibility of Clark come from his parents, and there is no better representation of them in the media of superheroes. Smallville I have always done a good job of using his time wisely, which makes Kents much more relatable, well balanced and intimately involved in the choices that Clark makes towards heroism. From start to finish, There is no other more important character for Clark’s trip than his parentsAnd it’s time for other adaptations to understand this.
