President Trump ensures troops receive their pay despite Democrats’ best efforts – RedState

President Trump came to the troops’ rescue Saturday by announcing that the War Department had found enough money to cover the next military paycheck on Oct. 15. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump announced that Schumer’s shutdown would not cause hardship for military families.

He wrote:

Chuck Schumer recently said, “Every day gets better” during their shutdown of the radical left. I DISAGREE! If nothing is done, because of “leader” Chuck Schumer and the Democrats, our brave troops will not receive the paychecks they are rightfully owed on October 15th. This is why I am using my authority, as Commander in Chief, to direct our Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to use all available funds to have our troops PAID on October 15th. We have identified funds to do this, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to pay our troops. I will not allow Democrats to hold our military and our nation’s entire security hostage with their dangerous shutdown of government. The radical left Democrats should OPEN THE GOVERNMENT, and then we can work together to solve health care and many other things they want to destroy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The media expected that the US military would no longer be paid as a result of Schumer’s shutdown.

Heather Campbell lost her job at a food bank over the summer due to federal funding cuts. Her husband is an Air Force officer, but now faces missing his next paycheck due to the government shutdown.

If Washington lawmakers don’t intervene, Campbell’s husband won’t get paid Wednesday. Because the couple does not have the savings to cover all their expenses, they hope to survive on their credit cards to pay the mortgage and feed their three children, accumulating debt as the political impasse drags on.

“You’re asking us to risk our lives or the people we love to risk their lives,” said Campbell, 39, who lives outside Montgomery, Ala., near Maxwell Air Force Base. “And you’re not even going to give us our salary. What? There’s a lot of broken trust there.”

It turned out that the government did not have to intervene.

Military commissioners were already leaning forward in anticipation of feeding more than a million members of the armed forces who had just missed their paychecks.

While military and homeland security operations can proceed quickly without current appropriations under provisions of the Civil War-era Food and Forage Act (see 41 USC § 6301), troops do not have this protection. In fact, in 1877 the U.S. Army served for an entire year without pay due to a struggle between Southern Democrats and Northern Republicans to end Reconstruction. Eventually, pay was reinstated, but no back pay was awarded. Meanwhile, the military was called in to quell the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, which swept 11 states and left dozens of strikers dead.

There is likely enough cash in the supply and R&D accounts to continue paying the troops until the Schumer shutdown ends. But it probably won’t be necessary. The House put on hold the Pay Our Troops Act (H.R. 1932). It could be put to a vote at any time if President Johnson wished. His fate in the Senate is uncertain, as it would make it harder for Schumer to extract concessions from Trump. The fact that Trump is willing to make the effort to pay the military will have an effect on hesitant Democratic senators.
