Police confirm “mass incident” in downtown Montgomery

Montgomery police responded to a “mass incident” early Sunday morning in the heart of the city center.

The incident occurred near the intersection of BibB and Commerce streets. Police and other emergency workers were on the scene around 1:30 am and traffic was diverted. Montgomery police lieutenant, Lieutenant Tina McGriff, said people that people should avoid the scene.

Police had not confirmed the number of victims, the nature of the event or if there was an immediate danger to the public.

The incident occurred during a busy evening in the city’s tourist district, a few hours after a football match between Tuskegee and Morehouse College University. The city made its debut on a ferris wheel and other attractions in the city center in collaboration with the game.
