Pitt Season 2 Introduced New Love Interest Dr. Robby, But It’s All A Little Dodgy

Emergency! This article contains spoilers for “The Pitt” season 2, episode 2.
Season 2 of “The Pitt” adds several new faces to the staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, including Meta Golding’s case manager, Noelle Hastings. However, it appears Hastings has been doing more than just administering patients’ cases since arriving at the hospital, as a scene in Episode 2 suggests that she and Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch have been seeing each other. At least that’s the implication, but this revelation comes with some suspicious looks from charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa), who clearly isn’t convinced that Robby’s new relationship is good for him. For what? At this point, our guess is as good as yours.
We all love “The Pitt” for its medical precision and the way it immerses us in what feels like real emergencies for 15 hours. We also love how “The Pitt” tackles major cultural issues and maintains its pointed social commentary — something that’s clearly at the forefront in Season 2. But let’s be honest. We also love interpersonal drama. Viewers are surely just as eager to find out what’s going on in the personal lives of the staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center as they are to see what bizarre and confusing medical cases come through the emergency room doors this season.
Fortunately, the show hasn’t forgotten about the interpersonal drama, and in Episode 2 of the second season, it looks like the writers are setting the stage for a lot of that. Hastings and Robby’s relationship remains somewhat mysterious, but Evans clearly isn’t convinced, so what’s going on between the two?
What is going on between Dr. Robby and Noelle Hastings?
In “The Pitt” season 2, episode 2, Fiona Dourif’s Dr. Cassie McKay treats a patient named Mr. Allen Billings (Michael Cognata), who arrives at the hospital with a compound dislocation after a tile fell on him. In one of the most graphic scenes yet in Season 2 (although not as graphic as the birth scene in Season 1 of “The Pitt”), Dr. Michael Robinavitch guides Taylor Dearden’s Dr. Melissa King in reinserting the bone manually. After this, McKay oversees Mr. Billings’ recovery, but is surprised when Noelle Hastings forces her patient to be transferred to another hospital.
Although McKay appealed to Dr. Robby, he agreed with Hastings. McKay then wonders why the two men seem so united in their belief that his patient should be moved when he needs surgery. Aside from being another example of how the best medical drama in years shines a light on real-life health issues, it’s also an intriguing but frustratingly vague moment.
At this point, we’re all in the dark as to what’s going on. But as Hastings and Dr. Robby grow further apart, it seems they have an extracurricular bond. Dr. Robby says that McKay is “good at figuring things out,” to which Hastings responds, “You didn’t say anything, did you?” Robby then tells him that he “subscribes[s] to Falstaff’s advice: discretion is the better part of valor”, in reference to a phrase from Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part 1”.
I think I speak for many “Pitt” fans when I say: What’s going on here? McKay may be a secret detective, but to us viewers it’s all very mysterious. From there, things get even murkier.
Not everyone approves of Dr. Robby’s new push
After Noelle Hastings asks Dr. Michael Robinavitch if he still leaves for his sabbatical after his shift, he confirms this and then tells her that he will meet her before he leaves. For what? It’s not entirely clear, but there’s obviously something going on between the two. After that, charge nurse Dana Evans asks Hastings if she knows what she’s doing, to which she replies that she’s “a big girl.”
What exactly is going on between Robby and Hastings, and why is everything so secret? We’ll surely find out more as Season 2 progresses, and it makes sense that if Dr. Robby is seeing a colleague, he’d want to keep them under the radar. It also wouldn’t be the first time he’s been involved with a colleague. Last season, we learned that he and Tracy Ifeachor’s Dr. Heather Collins (who left “The Pitt” before Season 2) had a previous romantic relationship, although just like with Dr. Robby’s new squeeze, the show didn’t provide many details.
Today, it seems the attending physician has found a new romance at work… probably. All of this is unclear, although Evans clearly does not approve. With plenty more drama to come, we’ll no doubt learn more soon, and hopefully we’ll get some real details this time and not just vague references to Dr. Robby’s romantic history.
