Penn State names Taylor Mouser as offensive coordinator, also adding Ryan Clanton and Deon Broomfield

Matt Campbell brought some notable off-the-field personnel to Penn State from Iowa State this week, but now he’s made his first significant on-field hires. And they are all former Cyclones.
Taylor Mouser will be Penn State’s offensive coordinator following his second season in the role at ISU. Ryan Clanton (offensive line) and Deon Broomfield (secondary defensive coordinator) will also follow Campbell.
Their names officially appeared with their titles in the Penn State yearbook Friday. Penn State On3 highlighted the news first.
With these hires, it heralds the impending departures of Penn State OC Andy Kotelnicki and OL coach Phil Trautwein. Broomfield’s role is somewhat ambiguous, however, making safeties coach Anthony Poindexter’s future uncertain. Broomfield was the safeties coach and passing game coordinator at Iowa State.
Mouser has served in various roles with Campbell since their days in Toledo in 2015. He has worked as the tight ends coach at Iowa State and in the scouting department.
As an offensive play caller in 2024, Mouser’s Iowa State group was 41st in scoring, 39th in yardage and 18th in plays of 20-plus yards nationally. In 2025, they fell slightly to 60th in scoring, 63rd in yards and 63rd in explosive plays.
Clanton, a former Oregon captain and national title winner, joined Campbell in 2023 and made an immediate impact. The Cyclones’ rushing attack improved from 103rd to 70th and finally 51st nationally over the past three seasons. Iowa State also saw tackle Jalen Travis drafted in the fourth round this year, the first offensive lineman taken from the school since 2013.
Finally, Broomfield played at Iowa State and just completed his fifth season on Campbell’s coaching staff. Iowa State had three safeties who earned All-Big 12 nominations in 2024.
Broomfield also coached as a defensive assistant for a year with the NFL’s Houston Texans and as a cornerbacks coach at Indiana State, Western Illinois and Carthage.
This trio of hires joins general manager Derek Hoodjer, chief of staff Greg Brabenec and a few members of the strength and conditioning staff to follow Campbell from Ames.
