President Donald Trump said Thursday he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary in the coming weeks after first meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Friday.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said “a meeting of our senior advisors” led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet next week, although the destination has not yet been confirmed.

“President Putin and I will then meet at an agreed location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this ‘inglorious’ war between Russia and Ukraine,” he said. “President Zelensky and I will meet tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more. I believe that great progress has been made through today’s telephone conversation.”

Trump threatens to ‘talk’ with Putin on supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as Russia hits hospital

Although Trump said the two had a lengthy conversation about U.S.-Russia trade, he made no mention of the U.S. arming Ukraine with high-level defense systems, like Tomahawk missiles — which is one of the main reasons Zelensky is coming to Washington and the issue that reportedly prompted Trump’s call with Putin to begin with.

Earlier this week, Trump said he should talk with Putin to see if he wants “the Tomahawks to go their way.”

Acquiring Tomahawk missiles is a top priority for Zelensky, as these sophisticated weaponry could reach well beyond Moscow and could alter Ukraine’s ability to further strike not only Russia’s military complex, but also its oil industry, which largely funds its war chest.

The announcement of the Trump-Putin meeting comes just hours after Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukrainian cities and energy sites in the early hours of Thursday morning.

KREMLIN WARNS THIS ‘COULD END BADLY FOR EVERYONE’ IF US PROVIDES LONG-RANGE MISSILES TO UKRAINE

“There are injured. Recovery efforts are underway everywhere. Emergency services are working,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the Russians would also use “double terror” tactics by targeting firefighters and energy sector workers with Shahed drones carrying cluster munitions.

“This fall, the Russians will take advantage of every day to attack our energy infrastructure,” he added. “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin has turned a deaf ear to everything the world says, so the only language that can still reach him is that of pressure – pressure through sanctions and pressure through long-range capabilities. »

Zelensky is traveling to Washington on Thursday to meet with Trump, as well as defense and energy officials, to discuss how to step up pressure on Putin in an effort to counter his war ambitions in Ukraine.

Trump told reporters this week that other defensive elements, such as more Patriot missiles, would also be addressed in Friday’s negotiations.

Trump has not confirmed whether he will provide Ukraine with the Tomahawk missiles, but he has increasingly expressed frustration that Putin will not end his war ambitions despite his efforts since returning to the White House in January.
