Peacemaker Season 2 Introduces Checkmate: The New DCU Team Explained

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 8
James Gunn has just introduced Checkmate, a brand new team in the DCU. As seen in Peacemaker In Season 2, Episode 8, several of the show’s main characters choose to sever their ties with ARGUS, the U.S. government’s primary defense agency dealing with metahumans, dangerous technology, and the paranormal. The result is Checkmate, an organization separate from the original DC Comics.
Debuting at the very end of Peacemaker season 2, episode 8, Checkmate is poised to become a must-watch in the future. Here’s everything we know about Checkmate from the DCU, his comic book history, and his DCU future.
What is checkmate? The All-New DCU Team Explained
In Peacemaker In the season 2 finale, ARGUS director Rick Flag Sr. joins forces with LuthorCorp to find an uninhabited world in another dimension using Chris Smith’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber. This results in the deaths of several ARGUS agents while searching for the correct portal containing what they are looking for.
Ultimately, all these deaths disturb ARGUS agent (and cyborg) Sasha Bordeaux. Learning that Flag and LuthorCorp want to make this planet an essential prison world for metahumans, called Salvation, Bordeaux reveals the truth to Emilia Harcourt. In response, the 11th St. Kids and other agents cut ties with ARGUS to do good for the world.
Built and financed by the millions of dollars in confiscated drug money that Adrian Chase had in his basement and dreamed up by Leota Adebayo (Amanda Waller’s daughter), Checkmate is now part of the DCU as the premier spy agency, “making the world a better place” according to its slogan. The DCU’s Checkmate also has key parallels to the Checkmate seen in the comics.
