Peace in Gaza ‘no small challenge’, says UK PM, as Palestinians fear ceasefire won’t be respected – live updates

“Trump’s Declaration for Lasting Peace and Prosperity,” in fullpublished at 08:53 BST
While there is uncertainty over the next steps in the Gaza peace process, at a summit in Egypt yesterday, four world leaders signed a document on the war – called “The Trump Declaration for Lasting Peace and Prosperity”.
It was jointly signed by US President Donald Trump, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Here is the full text of that document, as released by the White House:
We, the undersigned, welcome the truly historic commitment and implementation by all parties of the Trump peace deal, ending more than two years of profound suffering and loss – opening a new chapter for the region defined by hope, security and a shared vision of peace and prosperity.
We support and support President Trump’s sincere efforts to end the war in Gaza and bring lasting peace to the Middle East. Together, we will implement this agreement in a way that ensures peace, security, stability and opportunity for all people in the region, including Palestinians and Israelis.
We understand that a lasting peace will be one in which Palestinians and Israelis can prosper with the protection of their fundamental human rights, guaranteed security and respect for their dignity.
We affirm that meaningful progress comes from cooperation and sustained dialogue, and that strengthening ties among nations and people serves the enduring interests of regional and global peace and stability.
We recognize the deep historical and spiritual significance of this region for religious communities whose roots are closely tied to the land of the region – among them Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Respecting these sacred bonds and protecting their heritage sites will remain paramount in our commitment to peaceful coexistence.
We are united in our determination to dismantle extremism and radicalization in all its forms. No society can thrive when violence and racism are normalized or when radical ideologies threaten the social fabric. We are committed to addressing the conditions that enable extremism and promoting education, opportunity and mutual respect as the foundations of lasting peace.
We hereby commit to resolving future disputes through diplomatic engagement and negotiation rather than through force or protracted conflict. We recognize that the Middle East cannot endure a persistent cycle of protracted wars, stalled negotiations, or piecemeal, incomplete, or selective application of successfully negotiated terms. The tragedies experienced over the past two years must urgently remind us that future generations deserve better than the failures of the past.
We seek tolerance, dignity and equal opportunity for every person, ensuring that this region is a place where everyone can pursue their aspirations in peace, security and economic prosperity, regardless of race, faith or ethnicity.
We pursue a comprehensive vision of peace, security and shared prosperity in the region, based on the principles of mutual respect and a shared destiny.
In this spirit, we welcome the progress made in establishing comprehensive and lasting peace agreements in the Gaza Strip, as well as the friendly and mutually beneficial relations between Israel and its regional neighbors. We commit to working collectively to implement and sustain this legacy, building the institutional foundations on which future generations can prosper together in peace.
We are committed to a future of lasting peace.
