Overview of the Orioles-Yankees series: play spoiler or not

A few weeks ago, looking at the Orioles closing the season against the Yankees, I was wondering if the Orioles could perhaps eliminate the Yankees from the accommodation of a joker. Unfortunately for my sense of SchadenfreudeThe Blue Jays did not follow from them to keep the Yankees out of the image of the East. The two teams will enter this last weekend with the same record. Toronto holds the tie equality on or so on the Yankees.
Spoiler’s potential is still there during this last weekend for Orioles. Nothing as satisfactory as to bring out the 2011 Red Sox from the playoffs, but preventing the Yankees from winning the division would always be fun, especially doing it by winning matches in New York. The fundamental question is: are the Orioles currently in this task? Last week, they were not by losing three of the four in Baltimore while scoring six points on the four whole games.
These are games that matter. The statistics built there will count for season and career numbers. It is not very likely that anyone can really do anything to change the story of his season, or that the Orioles as a whole can do a lot to change the story of 2025.
One thing that has flowed in the past few days is that O will not end up with a player reaching more than 20 circuits this year, unless Gunnar Henderson or Colton Cowser really become Berserk in the last games here. So many things have gone wrong to find themselves here.
The Yankees, on the other hand, have seven players at more than 20 circuits, of course led Aaron Judge and its 50+ dingers. I suppose that something else can spoil this weekend is the Al MVP race between the judge and Cal Raleigh de Seattle. For whom they spoil it depends on the way they get started to judge specifically. The fact that Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish are aligned to go to this final series is good for the Orioles, at least.
Games 1 – Friday, 7:05 p.m. HE
- Starter ball: Trevor Rogers – 1.35 ERA, 2.42 FIP, 0.872 whip in 17 GS
- Nyy Starter: Will Warren – 4.35 ERA, 4.00 FIP, 1,373 whip in 32 gs
The Yankees used their two best guys in the previous series against the White Sox, probably to make sure that Max Fried and Carlos Rodón can be closer to regular rest in case the Yankees play in the Wild Card Round from Tuesday. The Yankees left with victories in these two games, so it also worked for them for this reason. Now they have warren against Rogers. There were not many games on paper where it’s better for Orioles this year. It could be one.
Rogers faced the Yankees only a week ago, preventing them on six sleeves on the way to a 4-2 Orioles victory. The second visit in a week, as well as the place passing to the Build-A-Barkpark stadium dimensions of the right field, swing things in favor of the yankees strikers in a way that was not the case a week ago. He had an incredible year, no matter what’s going on in this game. The more this final departure happens, the more fun it will be to try not to have finished in third place in the Cy Young vote or something in this direction.
It will be the fourth time that the Orioles will face Warren this year. They also saw it last Friday, with previous clashes in April and June. He did reasonably well, granting six points in 15 rounds.
Game 2 – Saturday, 1:05 p.m.
- Starter ball: Tomoyuki Sugano – 4.54 ERA, 5.21 FIP, 1,336 whip in 29 gs
- Nyy Starter: Cam Schlittler – 3.27 ERA, 3.94 FIP, 1,303 whip in 13 gs
Back in training in the spring, there was a pleasure around the idea that, apparently, Sugano signed with the Orioles because he thought it had given him the best chance in the World Series. This objective was crushed by chaos which occurred elsewhere in the starting rotation earlier in the season, as well as other reasons that arose on the way. However, if it is his only season in the United States before returning to Japan, I hope he is proud of what he has accomplished as an individual.
Admittedly, Orioles fans could have hoped for a little better. An era, a lower half would not have been bad. However, this is his 30th start, he has at least five rounds per game on average, and although there were clunkers along the way, he was not exploded from the League. The Yankees did it quite well on the 20th, scoring four points in three rounds.
Schlittler had a much better match against the Orioles on the 21st, granting a single point in 5.1 rounds. This one, you may remember, collapsed very late for O, because they abandoned six points in the tenth round to lose. It would be good if the Orioles could transform a choice of seventh round (or later) into a MLB caliber starter for a duration.
Match 3 – Sunday, 3:05 p.m.
- Starter ball: Kyle BRADISH – 2.25 ERA, 2.46 FIP, 1,000 whip in 5 GS
- Nyy Starter: Luis Gil – 3.29 ERA, 4.24 FIP, 1.442 whip in 10 GS
Because I am a person who holds sports resentments forever, Gil will always be the player who has won a recruit of the undeserved year on Colton Cowser. Is it an objective truth? No. Of course not. Gil has not launched much this year, and when he launched, he did not look like the guy a year ago, with his withdrawal rate falling almost half while his walking rate – already high in 2024 – climbed 5.4 bb / 9. He still gathered an enviable era, because there is no guaranteed justice in baseball.
Bradish Tommy John Comeback will not be defined by this last departure. It will be good if it is good, however. He picked up where he had stopped in 2024 so far and it was great to see. Admittedly, it is something that Orioles, looking for 2026, need to see. A healthy and still dominant bradish makes mathematics much easier to build a quality list for next year.
That’s it. When it is done, the 2025 Orioles season will be over. Unlike the last two years, this is not a sad opportunity. These guys were disappointing. The disappointment was not limited to April and May. They had a lot of problems throughout the season. All these elements were not linked to injuries. Some guys who were counted to be good were not good. Can they run things up next year? We will ask ourselves from now until the start of next season at the end of next March.
