Ourense – Oviedo: The cup goes to O Couto
Real Oviedo will travel to southeastern Galicia this Tuesday to face Ourense CF, who will once again welcome a first division team home after being left with honey on their lips last season.
Orense and Oviedo: their cupbearer backgrounds
In the 24/25 season, Ourense was one of the surprises in the early stages of the competition, when O Couto saw the elimination of a first division team like Real Valladolid by 3-2, coming back from 0-1 and 1-2. This result gave Ourense a place in the round of 16 of the cup, where they ended up losing at home 0–2 to Valencia, with an own goal and another from Umar Sadiq.

Real Oviedo, for its part, played its last cup match on October 31, 2024 at the Municipal Adolfo Suárez against Real Ávila, who achieved a 3-0 victory on penalties after a 0-0 draw in playing time.

Ourense and the most absolute illusion
After eliminating Real Valladolid last year, Ourense CF seeks and sees the possibility, like many other small clubs in Spain, of being the surprise of the Copa del Rey this year, which would partly compensate for the poor start in the league that currently places it in last position in Group A of the first federation. I doubt it was last season’s Pontevedra CF, who managed to hold this revelation title by eliminating Mallorca and Villarreal before losing to José Bordalás’ Getafe, in a match that the Galicians dominated with 84% possession that did not help them equalize Álvaro Rodríguez’s first goal.

Oviedo and the cup as reinforcement or danger
Those of Carrión will find themselves in O Couto facing a huge dilemma between the possible outcomes of the match. Like most first division teams that face teams from lower categories in these first cup phases, Oviedo faces Ourense CF in a duel in which they have a lot to lose and very little to gain. Victory is, in the context of both clubs, the minimum that supporters of the Carbayón team demand from their team, and defeat would be a very hard blow for a team lacking joy.
