CNET’s key takeaways
- No robot vacuum has truly solved the challenge of cleaning on multiple levels without requiring you to physically move it between floors.
- This robo-vac can do it, for the high-end price of $1,600.
- You won’t currently find any other robot vacuum with these features for less than $1,000.
The whole point of owning a robot vacuum cleaner is not having to do the cleaning yourself. But that’s never been the case for me – partly because of what I call my “Ikea chair challenge.” I’ve seen many robovacs get stuck at the bottom of one of my chairs, which has an unusually shaped base. It’s just another obstacle in my house, which is also filled with pet hair, paw prints, and three teenage sons who leave things lying around everywhere.
After the Dreame
Well, he conquered the Ikea chair. It was actually quite amusing to watch the Dreame
If you buy one now, you can get 31% off. I know, that doesn’t sound like much, but that’s a whopping $500 off. This brings the price of this sophisticated vacuum cleaner down to a record price of $1,100. Note that like most other evergreen Prime Day deals, this discount could disappear at any time.

My experience with the Dreame X50 Ultra robot vacuum cleaner
In terms of performance, the Dreame X50 Ultra was generally solid. He started with a complete deep cleaning, then vacuumed and mopped on his second pass. When setting up the app, I told it I had pets, so it emptied its trash several times on the first run. I found it was pretty smart to lift your mops while vacuuming the carpet.
It took 2 hours and 3 minutes to complete his work around my house. The mopping feature proved surprisingly effective, tackling the muddy paw prints on my vinyl plank floor as well as I could with a broom mop myself. And I was particularly impressed by his avoidance of objects; it navigated around shoes, cords, and even my two dogs without issue.
Setup was a breeze: the app was intuitive, and the machine’s build quality seemed sturdy, although with so many moving parts—like its auxiliary climbing arms and lowering turret—I question its long-term durability.
The Dreame X50 also did a great job of identifying cords and knew how to avoid them.
One of the key features that really stood out was the tangle-free roller. In my at-home test, comparing the Dreame X50 to my old Roborock Q5 after cleaning a large carpet, the difference was striking. The Roborock was clogged with hair, while the Dreame’s roller was completely clean. This is a huge advantage over competitors, who often struggle to deal with pet hair. This is another big test of mine — I call it my “Great Pyrenees Challenge” — and the Dreame X50 passed it with flying colors.
My family quickly got used to him moving around, and he became almost like another member of the household – quirky and sometimes a little confusing but overall very useful. In the end, seeing it navigate obstacles like the base of my Ikea chair, where other robots get stuck, wasn’t just effective. It was really fun to watch.
Let’s take a closer look at the Dreame X50 brushroll. It can be removed easily if you ever need to clear anything that might be stuck between the two rollers.

CNET’s buying advice
The Dreame X50 will take photos of your pets if you enable this setting. You can click on the pet icon on the cleaning card to view photos after a cleaning cycle.
The Dreame X50 Ultra is feature-rich, ideal for avoiding pets, obstacles and objects. It’s best if you want advanced navigation and cleaning and are willing to pay extra for features like climbing arms and lowered turret. However, it’s not the best for pure vacuuming, especially on carpets, and the software can be a little quirky. However, the good news is that Dreame is making the technology more affordable, with the threshold-hopping capability applying to other models, including the new Aqua 10 and L40s Ultra series.
At its full price of around $1,600, the Dreame X50 Ultra is a very expensive robot vacuum. If you greatly value its unique features, like climbing ability and advanced furniture navigation, it might be worth the investment. However, if you’re primarily concerned with raw suction power or are on a tighter budget, there are more cost-effective options. It’s a luxury product and the value matches its premium features.
For better carpet vacuuming performance and a lower price, the Ecovacs Deebot T30S or iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus performed better on carpet and pet hair tests in CNET’s lab testing. Although all three have vacuuming and mopping features, the Ecovacs Deebot T30S ($1,400 with stick vacuum included) or iRobot Roomba Combo J7 ($600) are less expensive than the Dreame X50 Ultra ($1,600). It’s worth pointing out, however, that the Dreame
This is the app’s live view mode that lets you see what the robot is seeing in real time from its front camera. It’s a great way to monitor your home when you’re away from home.
