Open of France 2025: Joao Fonseca carries the hopes of Brazil as he seeks to shock Jack Draper

Unlike some of Brazil’s sports superstars, the story of Fonseca is not one of the humble beginnings of the Rio Favelas.

Fonseca grew up in a rich family and started playing tennis at the Rio de Janeiro Country Club – one of the most exclusive private places in Brazil.

His father, Christiano, is a businessman who founded his own company of Hedge Fund, while Mother Roberta was a junior volleyball player who moved into the management of sporting events.

“For me, tennis began as a hobby when I was 10 or 11 years old,” said Fonseca.

“Things became more serious at the age of 12 and I changed my coach and school.

“I started practicing twice a day in the pandemic. Things have changed very quickly.”

The world sponsors have started to put lucrative contracts on the table – including the partial sportswear brand by Roger Federer – while the main agents offered their services.

But Fonseca’s parents decided to guide him themselves with the help of Manager Gustavo Abreu, a former colleague from Christiano.

“I have a very good base with my family and the team,” added Fonseca.

“They help me keep my feet on the ground and focus on my routine.

“They know what I have to do to improve my game and my personality.”
