One of the highest-grossing horror films finds new success on HBO Max

2025 was one of the most important years for the horror film genre in Hollywood, especially for Warner Bros. Discovery, since the studio released several episodes that became massive hits. While one of their films is officially available on HBO Max, audience members quickly helped it become a streaming success.
Zach Cregger Weaponsthe suspenseful supernatural mystery about the disappearance of several children for unknown reasons, made its way to HBO Max, Friday, October 24, 2025. The 2025 entry has already emerged on the Warner Bros.-owned streaming service’s streaming charts. Discovery, because it is currently the number 1 title on the platform in the USA.
The film starring Julia Garner grossed $267.5 million at the worldwide box office, with $151.5 million coming from domestic ticket sales, while $116 million came from the international market. Cregger’s film was reportedly made on a budget of $38 million, making it a big hit for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Weapons’ instant success on HBO Max arrived shortly after Warner Bros. Discovery has officially started strategizing for awards seasonas the horror film is part of their FYC cycle. The studio is considering the film for several Oscar categories, including best picture, best actress (for Julia Garner) and best director (for Zach Cregger).

In by ScreenRant Weapons review of the film, Zack Moser explained how “While there are certainly moments of tension-relieving humor, Weapons never ceases to be a horror film, more Scream than Cabin in the Woods.” The film currently sits at 93% in the critics’ score while having an 85% approval in the audience’s score on Rotten Tomatoes.
During an interview with Variety on August 8, 2025, Cregger said he had ideas for potential sequels in the Weapons world, “Definitely. Actually, I… it’s funny you should ask that. I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m a little excited about.” However, he stressed that it was “I won’t do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I have one and I’d like to see it on screen one day.”
