Notre Dame hired the former Garrity on Tuesday to serve as director general of the male and female basketball teams of Fighting Irish.

The role of the double GM is new to Notre Dame and would only be the second role of this type – supervising male and female sports – in university athletics. Baker Dunleavy occupies a similar position, created in 2023, for Villanova basketball programs.

Garrity, 48, will also supervise male basketball as a principal sports administrator.

Garrity graduated in 1998 and was drafted in the first round (19th in total) that year by the Milwaukee Bucks. He always ranks fifth in the history of Notre Dame’s school with 2,085 career points.

The 6-feet 9 inch striker spent 10 seasons in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns (1998-1999) and Orlando Magic (1999-2008) and on average 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 552 games (107 departures).

He was Deputy Director General of Strait Pistons from 2016 to 20.

“I am delighted to return to Notre Dame,” said Pat Garrity. “At each moment of my career and my life, Notre Dame has always been a second house for me and my family. The university has shaped who I am, and its values resonate deeply in me.

“… Thank you for your confidence and for having offered me this incredible new opportunity. I can’t wait to start serving our exceptional students in both programs and to contribute to the wider mission of our sports department and the university.”

Notre-Dame’s male team finished 15-18 (8-12 ACC) in 2024-25 under the second year coach Micah Shrewsberry, missing the NCAA tournament for a third consecutive season.

The women’s team went 28-6 (16-2 ACC) last season under the fifth year Niele Ivey, reaching Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season.

Garrity’s responsibilities include the development of long -term strategies for the management of alignments in the era of the transfer portal, as well as budgetary analysis, revenue generation, fundraising, relations with the Elders and the management of facilities.

“We could not be more excited to welcome Pat to Notre Dame,” said sports director Pete Bevacqua. “With the rhythm of change in university sports, we knew that we had to find someone who could support Micah and denies with everything that is required by high-level basketball programs, while focusing on training and support for our incredible student-athletes.

“Being able to bring someone like Pat, who is a former student of Notre-Dame, former student-athlete, 10-year-old veteran from the NBA, former executive of the NBA Front Office and Parent de Notre Dame, made him the perfect candidate from the start.”
