Not Gautam Gambir! Rohit Sharma attributes Rahul Dravid for the winning champions trophy in India 2025

Captain of the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma, revealed how Rahul Dravid helped the team win the Tournament de marqueau
Former India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma credited ex-head coach Rahul Dravid for instilling a mentality in the team that helped them win Champions Trophy. After the heartbreak in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the Hitman-led Men in Blue, under the guidance of The Wall, lifted the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid was then replaced by Gautam Gambhir who tasted success in the 50-over format for the first time earlier this year when Rohit and co. won the CT 2025.
‘We carried it well’
Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards on Tuesday, Rohit revealed that all players who were a part of the Champions Trophy had gotten into the thought process of how to win games, challenge themselves and not take anything for granted. He said that the entire team enjoyed the process, having done it repeatedly. Sharma said that this was something that had helped Dravid and himself during the T20 World Cup 2024 and ‘that it carried over to CT 2025 as well.
“Those were the qualities that we tried to bring in and we thought it was a good method of just going and doing that repeatedly. Everyone enjoyed that process. Once we got over the line when we won the first game, we completely put that game aside and then started focusing on the next one. That was really good from the team and that is something that helped me and Rahul bhai when we were planning for the T20 World Cup, and then on to the Champions Trophy. We just carried it well,” Rohit said.
Rohit retired from T20Is after winning the World Cup last year. In May 2025, he announced his retirement from Test cricket as well. Currently, he is active only in the ODI format, that too just as a player since he has been replaced by Shubman Gill as the captain for the 50-over format.
“Look, I love that team, loved playing with them and it’s a journey that we were all into, for many years. It’s not about one year or two years of work. It was about getting into work from many years. We’d come so close of winning that trophy many times but we couldn’t just get over the line. That is where everyone decided that we need to do something different and there’s two (ways) to look at it. There’s always a thought of doing that and then actually going and doing that. It cannot be done by one or two players. We needed everyone to buy into that thought, which was good from everyone,” Rohit added.
