No, Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams are not playing these Star Wars Legends characters in ‘Starfighter’

News about Star Wars movies have been lackluster in recent years, and now we suddenly have a lot of them at once with The Mandalorian and Grogu just around the corner and Star Wars: Starfighter filming. The latter recently unveiled his first official image with Ryan Gosling And Flynn GrayAnd the first details about the plot have also surfacedalluding to the importance of Gray’s character and Gosling’s role in protecting him at the request of his mother, played by Amy Adams.
This was already enough to get some fans spinning and theorizing, connecting the actors to characters from the latest Legends continuity in Star Wars. According to some of these theories, Gosling could be playing a version of Cade Skywalker, a distant descendant of Luke Skywalker (Marc Hamill), while Adams could be Mara Jade, a former Imperial assassin who later becomes Luke’s wife. But it is impossible for them to play these characters in Starfighterbecause both characters cannot exist in Canon. It’s not that they shouldn’t exist – they can’t.
It makes no sense that Ryan Gosling would play Cade Skywalker in ‘Starfighter’
Looking at Ryan Gosling’s outfit and hair, it’s natural to think that he could play a scoundrel type character. Star Wars I love these, and his appearance resembles that of Cade Skywalkerone of the Skywalker clan’s greatest villains. He is the main character of Star Wars: Legacy comics, which concluded shortly before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. This is not, however, your typical adventure story in a galaxy far, far away. Legacy divides fans for multiple reasons, including its dark tone, late appearance in the Legends timeline, bold story elements (e.g. Star Wars standards, at least) and Cade himself, who isn’t exactly a fan favorite.
When we think of Skywalkers, people like to think of lightsaber-wielding heroes performing somersaults, but Cade is none of those things. He is a survivor of yet another Jedi purge who has decided to live off the grid. after losing his entire family to the Sith, he turned to the death sticks to numb himself and remove his sensitivity to the Force. Eventually, he is forced to act and face his demons, but remains reluctant about his role in the fight. It takes the Force ghost of his ancestor Luke Skywalker himself to come back to haunt Cade, otherwise he would rather stay out of it and continue working as a bounty hunter.
The problem is that Legacy takes place over a century after the events of the original trilogy, and Cade is a direct descendant of Luke. In the new canon, however, Luke has no direct descendants and the Skywalker biological line ends with Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Starfighter takes place five years after this film, and there was obviously no time for Rey Skywalker (Marguerite Ridley) also had an adult son. If Gosling really turns out to be a Cade-like character, he can’t be a Skywalkerbecause that would recklessly break canon just to cater to fans who would complain about it anyway.
Amy Adams can’t play Mara Jade, as it would go against previously established canon
The second speculation is that Amy Adams could play a version of Mara Jade, a former Imperial assassin who eventually becomes Luke Skywalker’s wife in Legends. With the alleged conspiracy that Adams would play Flynn Gray’s character’s mothersome fans thought this could mean Adams is Mara Jade and Gray could be the son of Luke, who in Legends is called Ben Skywalker. These two characters play key roles in Legends stories, as New Jedi Order And Legacy of the Force series of books, and, although George Lucas he himself couldn’t stand the character, she’s actually a fan favorite.
Mara Jade was created by Timothy Zahn for the Heir to the Empire trilogy in the early 1990s. It is known as the Hand of the Emperor, that of Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) the best assassin, and begins seeking revenge on Luke for killing his master. However, as the story develops, they become lovers and Luke trains her in the Jedi way — she even uses the Skywalker saber, Anakin’s old weapon. As the Skywalker clan grows, so do their troubles, and Mara Jade eventually becomes the focus of the Legacy of the Force series, as the Second Galactic Civil War begins thanks to the actions of Jacen Solo, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and that of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), who falls to the dark side and becomes the Sith Lord Darth Caedus.
In the new canon, however, Mara Jade simply can’t exist as Luke’s former romantic interest (Mark Hamill’s main canon notwithstanding), because that would amount to piecing together the entire Sequel Trilogy and render three billion-dollar movies essentially worthless. Luke has a perfect understanding of the Jedi Order’s countless flaws, but, until the end of Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedicould never rise above them. If he’s ever had a romantic affair, It had to have happened before that, and it just wouldn’t fit the character. If Amy Adams is really playing Mara Jade, it must be a version that never fell in love with Luke, which would also be against her as a character.
“The story of Starfighter seems pretty simple, and that’s what people should expect
Of course, both theories are wrong, because they are primarily based on how actors act, and that’s not really how things should be done. Just because Ryan Gosling, who is blonde, shows up with unkempt hair doesn’t mean he’s playing Cade Skywalker, and Amy Adams being a redhead doesn’t mean she’s playing fellow redhead Mara Jade. In fact, with what we know about the plot of Starfighter so far, it’s more likely they’ll be playing entirely new characters, as they should be. According to rumors floating around the internet, Gosling is a thug-type character tasked with saving the child of Adams, played by Flynn Gray, from the bad guys, as the child seems quite special, possibly Force-sensitive.
It’s a pretty simple story, and a child with special abilities who needs to be saved is a recurring trope in Star Warsso the chances of these details being true are quite high. If the franchise wants to return to cinema and stay there, it will have to focus on fresh and accessible stories. Bringing the Legends characters to the big screen seems like a huge mistake at this point.because that would control who the characters are in order to please the few of us who have read the books. This would basically mean that Star Wars isn’t for everyone, but only for those who know everything about it, and that’s exhausting. Star Wars needs more, newer fans; otherwise, it will eventually collapse in on itself.
Speaking of bringing new things to the franchise, this is another reason why Gosling and Adams shouldn’t play familiar characters. Starfighter is fixed five years later The Rise of Skywalkeran entirely new period in galactic history, and This is exactly where the franchise is supposed to be heading. What does the galaxy look like? Has Rey ever brought back the Jedi in any way? Is this why Flynn Gray’s character is on the run? I hope these are the answers Starfighter will give it to us, instead of giving unnecessary winks to old fans who have nothing new to add to the debate.
