NFL Admits Vikings Kicker Was Deceived by Camera Cable; I won’t fix it

The Minnesota Vikings are off this weekend, enjoying their only bye week for the 2025 NFL season. It’s well deserved after spending the better part of the last two weeks feeling homesick abroad, where they played two games in Europe and came away with a win.

This victory was not easy either. After losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4 in Dublin, it took a last-minute touchdown run from Carson Wentz & Co. for the Vikings to earn a close 21-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 5 in London.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Tottenham Hotspur Camera Cable

If the offense hadn’t gotten a late double in London, however, the Minnesota Vikings and their fans would be a lot more vocal about a camera feed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that cost their kicker Will Reichard three points against the Cleveland Browns earlier in the same quarter.

The camera work on the replay made it very difficult to see the actual contact, but Reichard’s fourth-quarter field goal attempt above (which would have tied the game at that point) appeared to hit a camera cable, causing it to deflect hard right and far off the post.

Prior to this field goal attempt, Will Reichard was a perfect 8 for 8 during the 2025 regular season. So when his aides saw evidence that Will’s missed kick was caused by a camera cable, they submitted a request to the league to have the missed kick removed from his statistics.

NFL admits cable blocked Will Reichard’s kick

In response, the NFL admitted that Reichard’s kick did indeed hit the camera cable – something it had not yet publicly realized. But according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the league won’t go back and fix things.

Instead, the league informed the MN Vikings kicker that, even if his kick had hit the wire, they would not change his individual stats to show one less miss on the season, meaning Will the Thrill’s stat line for the season still shows 8 of 9.

It’s a shame Will Reichard can’t correct his numbers properly. However, the NFL’s acknowledgment that football has actually hit the field makes this news interesting to me. There have been an absurd crowd of people on the Internet who have tried to pretend that Reichard’s field goal attempt never hit a wire — that it was simply an optical illusion.

Of course, an introductory physics course might teach you that the ball came into contact with the camera cable. However, after the league confirmed it, the internet can now put an end to Cablegate 2025…right?

When the 3-2 Minnesota Vikings return to play in Week 7, they will host the Philadelphia Eagles at US Bank Stadium. This is far from a must-win game, but if the Vikings want to qualify as a playoff team in a few months, this would certainly go a long way in helping them get there.
