New York Yankees gets closer to Devin Williams after playing a role

When Devin Williams was withdrawn from his role as one of the New York Yankees closing launchers last month, there were certainly concerns about the tense wardrobe between him and his replacement, RHP Luke Weaver.

However, after the dominant performance of Weaver in a standard scan against the Texas Rangers, he had only kind things to say about his predecessor.

“Devin is the man. I mean, he is obviously one of the best in the game-there are periods of adjustment with anything,” he said in a video published by Sny Yankees on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

“You just try to minimize errors. Sometimes they are completely uncontrollable and they pour and try to stop this momentum and sometimes they are minimal-we can make these mistakes quickly,” he continued. “Sometimes we are lucky and sometimes we don’t do it, so everything being said, it’s great to make it do your thing.”

Weaver implemented an excellent performance in the fence role of Yankees, appearing at an MPM of 0.40 in 22.2 innings launched so far in 2025. It also served closest for the last months of the 2024 season, during which he launched 84 rounds for an MPM of 2.89.

Williams was removed from the closest role in April after a blown match against the Blue Jays in Toronto where he launched a 9th round without withdrawal, which led to the launcher Alejandro Kirk hitting a double, giving the Blue Jays. Williams said in a recent interview with the New York Daily News that he is not worried about being withdrawn from the closing role.

“It doesn’t matter at the moment,” said Williams. “It doesn’t matter.”

Weaver maintained his support for Williams, saying that he was not concerned about the performance of the nearest former.

“I was certainly not worried for him for a second and he found his rhythm, he controls his game, his tempo, and he is just dominant.”
