New year, new TV? I would highly recommend going with this older LG OLED for gaming in 2026

I’m about to look like a drama queen, but the LG OLED C4 has completely changed my living room gaming experience. Before investing in a gaming TV just this year, I found myself avoiding traditional couch console sessions due to my dull old LED panel.
The only problem is that since we’re about to enter 2026, gaming TV’s top contender is about to be two generations old. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I made an active decision to choose the C4 over the new OLED C5 in 2025. The reason? Well, I always tend to try to acquire generational technology at the end of its life cycle to save money, but I wouldn’t say the benefits included with new models are worth paying the full price for, unless you’re an ultra enthusiast.
You may be wondering why I’m telling you to buy a 2024 TV in 2026, especially since the LG OLED C6 will likely enter the ring this year. I think as a gaming monitor, the C4 is going to give you solid vibrancy, refresh rates, and brightness, and once these new models arrive, it might be harder to find at its lowest price.
Overall, the generation differences between the LG OLED C-series TVs are marginal. Yes, the latest generation panels feature improved Tandem RGB technology that goes even further in terms of clarity and vibrancy, but the C4 models still feature MLA+ (Micro Lens Array) technology that elevates brightness and colors beyond ordinary OLED displays. If you’re really nerdy about things like color purity and higher nit counts, then you’ll naturally want to look at newer models, but if you’re just looking for a great PS5, Xbox, or Switch 2 experience, it’s worth saving money on the slightly older version.
That’s not to say I don’t appreciate the specs of high-end TVs, and if money wasn’t a factor, I’d buy a flagship model in 2026. However, I think it’s worth asking whether paying a lot more will actually benefit you, because while previous high-end panels like the LG OLED G4 blew me away, the difference isn’t that dramatic in terms of brightness and HDR clarity.
Ultimately, I think most of you will be happy if you manage to get your hands on an LG OLED C4 in 2026. It’s currently my daily living room driver and hopefully will be for several years to come. Every time I sit down to play the Switch 2 in TV mode or dive into my PS5 collection, I’m always caught off guard by the vibrant visuals and crispness of the screen, not to mention the fact that being able to hit 144Hz using PCs still seems like an absolute novelty.
The C4 OLED isn’t the only display available, and you’ll still want to consider all options when jumping into 2026. This recommendation absolutely comes from a place of subjective personal use rather than declaring the winner of each option, and if you can get LG’s display back at an all-time high, I’d do it early in the year.
