Netflix teams up with Gary Lineker for the World Cup “The rest is football”

Gary Lineker Podcast goes global on Netflix.

The former BBC presenter will host a daily version of the show, alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, during the FIFA World Cup in North America next year.

The rest is football will be anchored in a studio in New York and will feature analysis and reporting on World Cup matches, as well as special guests.

Netflix and The rest is football do not hold the US or UK rights to live matches or highlights from the World Cup, so the show is unlikely to feature any on-field action. Fox will broadcast the games in America, while the BBC and ITV will share rights in the UK.

The rest is football launching in 2023 and is part of the Goalhanger podcast line, which also includes The rest is history And The rest is entertainment.

The show, which has 7 million monthly streams, was initially launched in partnership with the BBC, but new episodes stopped airing on BBC Sounds after Lineker left the channel after a 30-year absence in May.

Lineker was scheduled to present the World Cup for the BBC, but left abruptly after sharing a now-deleted Instagram video from the Palestine Lobby account that superimposed a cartoon rat emoji over an explanation about the Israel-Gaza war and Zionism. Rats have always been used as an anti-Semitic trope. Lineker apologized for this message.

Commenting on the deal with Netflix, Lineker said: “We look forward to offering The rest is football to Netflix for the 2026 World Cup. This is a fantastic opportunity for the three of us to do what we love – talking about football every day – but on a truly global stage. Expect all the usual analysis, honesty and lots of laughs… just with a few extra cameras trained on us, all from the Big Apple.

WME represented Goalhanger in negotiating the Netflix deal.
