Negroni recipe – Love and lemons

This Negroni recipe is easy to make with equal parts, Campari and Sweet Vermouth. It is a delicious and classic cocktail – bits, citrus and sweet.

One Negroni is one of Jack’s favorite summer cocktails. If I sip a Spritz Aperol or a glass of white wine (or even better, rosé), there is a good chance that it appreciates this classic Italian drink.

It is not the only one to be a fan – the Negroni cocktail has become a little a trend (OK, a major) in recent years, so I thought it was time that we were sharing a recipe here, especially now that we are heading for summer.

You can find our Negroni recipe below. This classic recipe is easy to make with 4 ingredients, and it has a sprinkled, bitter and slightly aggregated flavor with a touch of sweetness. In Italy, it is a common apero or a drink before dinner. Why not do it for happy hours throughout the summer?

Gin, sweet vermouth, campaid and an orange

What is a Negroni cocktail?

In case you are not familiar, A negroni is an Italian cocktail made with equal parts, Campari and Sweet Vermouth.

It has probably evolved from the Americano cocktail, a drink made from campair, sweet vermouth and soda water. History tells that Count Camillo Negroni, an Italian count living in Florence, Italy, at the beginning of the 20th century, ordered his American Americanos instead of soda water, and therefore Negroni was born.

Negroni ingredients

Here is what you will need to make this recipe:

  • Gin – Use any brand you like. Our Go-Tos are Hendrick’s, St. George Botanivore and Koval Dry Gin.
  • Campari – Have you ever tried Aperol? Campari is another sweet-bitter Italian liquor, and it is in fact manufactured by the same company. It gives this drink its vibrant color, its bitter finish and its orange skin notes.
  • Sweet vermouth – This fortified wine softens the Negroni and improves the bitter and earthy notes of the Campari. Two of our favorite brands are the Antica Formula in Dolin and Carpano.
  • Orange mud – For the garnish! I love the way it brings out the orange-y notes in the campaid.
  • And ice cream – The more cold this cocktail, the more refreshing it is. You will stir the ingredients with ice to cool them and also serve the finished drink on the ice.

Variations

Negroni’s variations were all the rage lately.

  • Bad negroni – Replace the Gin with Prosecco for a brighter and more brilliant drink.
  • Boulevardier – Jack likes this one! Use bourbon whiskey or rye instead of the gin.

Let me know if you try one!

How to make a negroni

Doing a negroni could not be easier, especially because it has a 1: 1: 1: 1: 1: soft vermouth ratio and a campair.

Simply add an ounce of each to a glass to mix with ice and stir until cooling.

Pass in a cocktail glass filled with ice or a large square ice cube.

Garnish orange skin and serve! A negroni is a perfect drink to sip with small bites like olives, a bruschetta or an antipasto tray.

  • Advice: Because you use the same amount of each ingredient in this drink, you can easily increase the recipe to make several cocktails. I use an ounce of everything to make a cocktail. Use two ounces to make two, etc.!
