Nearly 100 people fell with norovirus – also known as the stomach bug – during a recent epidemic of cruise shipsCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday.
Here’s what you need to know.
During a 13 -day trip from San Diego to Miami, 94 passengers and four crew members on Serenade des MersA royal Caribbean ship caught the Norovirus.
The ship sailed on September 19, 2025 and nine days later, on September 28, people began to get sick with diarrhea and vomiting.
As the ship accosted on October 2, the infection had spread to 5% of passengers and 0.5% of the crew.
According to the CDC, Royal Caribbean International, as well as the healthy crew members aboard the ship, responded to the epidemic with:
- Increased cleaning and disinfection
- Collection of saddles samples to test
- Isolate sick passengers and crew members
- Consult the sanitation program for CDC ships on cleaning and report procedures
It should be noted that Serenade des Mers received an almost perfect 96 sanitation score when the CDC inspected the ship on June 25, 2025.
Norovirus epidemics are common on cruise ships. Actually, This is the 14th epidemic of Norovirus aboard a cruise ship in 2025 so far.
This is because the virus is very contagious. It can survive surfaces for weeks, and it is more difficult to kill than other pathogens. (Norovirus is one of 0.01% of the germs that the disinfectant of the hands cannot kill.)
In the neighborhoods close to a cruise ship, the virus can spread quickly. Epidemics are also easier to report and follow on boats than on earth.
People catch norovirus by swallowing the virus, generally by eating contaminated foods or by contacting the pathogen, then touching their mouths.
The CDC has several tips for preventing norovirus as a cruise:
- Often wash your hands and do not rely on the hand disinfectant.
- Drink a lot of water and sleep a lot.
- Leave the area if you see someone suffering from diarrhea or vomiting.
- If you feel sick, say the ship’s medical center immediately.
