NBCUniversal Joins YouTube to Explore TV Rights for the 2029 Oscars and Beyond

NBC, the former home of the Golden Globes, wants to become the future home of the Oscars. Deadline confirmed with sources last month that NBCUniversal had conversations with the Academy about the awards show after its current deal with ABC expired after the 2028 ceremony.

The move makes sense since NBCUniversal hasn’t held a major awards show since dropping the Globes in 2023, with the company maintaining its own fan base. Audience Award franchise. In live entertainment, NBCU has had a lot of success in recent years with the venerable Macy’s Thanksgiving Paradewhich has broken viewership records, most recently attracting a monster 34.3 million viewers on NBC and Peacock last week.

NBCU joins YouTube, which threw its hat into the Oscar ring over the summer. Amazon is also rumored to be a potential Oscar contender, although the extent of its interest is unclear.

Netflix, which streams the Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards) to attract stars to the platform, has not pursued the Oscars and has no plans to do so, sources said.

The Oscars have been in play since this spring, when the Academy’s exclusive negotiating window with longtime network ABC expired. Sources said at the time that the Academy asked for more money than the network was willing to offer in the form of increased licensing fees, leading to an impasse and the organization’s decision to hand over the marquee awards to other networks and platforms.

According to sources, ABC’s parent company, Disney, and the Academy have not had conversations since, with the door open for the Oscars governing body to reconnect with its long-term broadcast partner.

Meanwhile, Disney is preparing for the arrival of the Grammy Awards in 2027.
