Monaco v Tottenham – Lineups, stats and preview

Monaco-Tottenham match preview
Neither Monaco nor Tottenham have returned to action after the international break, and both now aim to right some wrongs in Wednesday’s Champions League championship stage clash at the Stade Louis II.
Both teams took a point from their second day meetings, as the League One club held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw, while the Lilywhites played out a four-goal thriller of their own with Bodo/Glimt.
Tottenham have claimed a respectable four points from the first six available on their return to Champions League territory, although it might have felt like three points to Bodo/Glimt last time out.
Meeting their opponents in the 2024-25 Europa League semi-finals – who they beat 5-1 on aggregate last season – Spurs found life much more difficult in the Arctic Circle and needed a final own goal from Jostein Gundersen to salvage a 2-2 draw.
However, this result combined with an opening victory against Villarreal extended the Lilywhites’ unbeaten run in the Champions League to six matches, losing just twice in their last 12.
However, Thomas Frank’s Aston Villa handed them another domestic setback this weekend with a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League – leaving Tottenham with just one win from their last four games in all competitions.
For all their inconsistencies at home, Thomas Frank’s side remain unbeaten away from north London in 2025-26, excluding their European Super Cup penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Monaco are adjusting to life under new management after Sebastien Pocognoli replaced Adi Hutter during the international break. Hutter was dismissed following a poor run of results which saw just one win in five games, including a 4–1 defeat to Club Brugge and a 2–2 draw against Manchester City in Europe.
Pocognoli’s first match in charge – a 1-1 draw against Angers – offered few signs of immediate improvement. Monaco have now drawn three consecutive matches in all competitions and remain without a clean sheet this season.
The Ligue 1 side, however, recorded back-to-back 2-1 wins over Spurs during the 2016-17 Champions League campaign and will look to regain that same lead at the Stade Louis II.
News from the Monaco team at Tottenham
Tottenham’s preparations for Wednesday’s trip have been disrupted by renewed defensive injury problems. Captain Cristian Romero suffered a groin problem during the warm-up against Aston Villa, while Destiny Udogie missed that match with a knee problem. It is unlikely that both will appear here.
Kevin Danso is expected to once again partner Micky van de Ven in central defense, although Van de Ven is one warning away from a suspension.
Spurs remain without several key midfielders and attackers – Dejan Kulusevski (knee), James Maddison (knee), Yves Bissouma (ankle), Radu Dragusin (knee), Kota Takai (foot), Ben Davies (muscle) and Dominic Solanke (ankle) all sidelined – while Mathys Tel is ineligible.
Monaco is facing its own fitness issues. Eric Dier, now with the French team, will miss the opportunity to face his former club due to a hamstring injury. Lukas Hradecky (knee), Christian Mawissa (hamstring), Vanderson (hamstring), Denis Zakaria (adductor) and Lamine Camara (ankle) are all unavailable, while Paul Pogba is still not fit for the match.
Sébastien Pocognoli is at least well supplied in attack, where Folarin Balogun could replace Mika Biereth after coming off the bench to score against Angers.
