Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz questions Alabama football’s Kalen DeBoer about black hoodie

Eli Drinkwitz first asked permission. At the conclusion of his participation in the SEC’s weekly media teleconference, the Missouri football head coach spoke with moderator, SEC Communications Director Chuck Dunlap.
“Hey, can I ask Kalen the first question or is that inappropriate?” » asked Drinkwitz, as Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer prepared for his 10-minute slot. “Because I just want to know if he’s going to wear that black hoodie or not. I call it the hoodie of death.”
Dunlap immediately and correctly assessed the attitude of the media listening to him.
“I would expect everyone on the call to probably vote yes for this,” Dunlap said.
He didn’t understand the first question. It went to a local beatwriter, who asked DeBoer about tight end Josh Cuevas.
However, before his team’s game against Alabama in Columbia on Saturday, Drinkwitz was serious.
“Coach, it looks like your next question will come from Eli Drinkwitz of Missouri athletics,” Dunlap announced.
“Hey Kalen,” Drinkwitz began. “Are you going to wear the black hoodie of death on the sidelines of this game, with us wearing black jerseys?”
DeBoer’s black hoodie has taken on a life of its own for Alabama fans. Since arriving in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide is 11-2 when wearing it during games, and 1-3 when not wearing it.
The second-year head coach is well aware of the hoodie conversation and noted that everyone from his players to his girls have talked to him about it. DeBoer maintained that the success didn’t come from the hoodie, although he has worn it to every game since a social media post showing his record of wearing the garment went viral among Crimson Tide fans.
DeBoer laughed off Drinkwitz’s question during Wednesday’s conference call.
“Oh, Coach Drink,” DeBoer said, pausing for a moment before continuing as Drinkwitz audibly laughed. “I have to fit in somehow. More than likely. We’ll see what the predictions are. I kind of know, but yeah, I’m executing this, so it kind of has a life of its own right now.”
The answer satisfied Drinkwitz.
“That’s the only question I had to find out for the day,” Drinkwitz said. “Alright, see you soon.”
Missouri is 5-0 heading into Saturday’s game at Faurot Field and is coming off a bye week. Alabama beat Vanderbilt last week, improving to 4-1.
The Crimson Tide and Tigers are scheduled to tip off at 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
