Millie introduces AI solution for maternity care

Millie, a women’s health clinic, launched a new AI agent on Tuesday that aims to provide more personalized support in maternity care.
Millie, based in San Francisco, offers miscarriage management, breastfeeding support, mental health counseling, prenatal education, postpartum support groups and gynecological care. It has a collaborative care model that includes midwives, doulas and doctors, and care is provided virtually through its app and in physical clinics. The company partners with health systems and accepts commercial health plans and Medicaid.
Its new AI tool, called Maia, is integrated into Millie’s patient-facing mobile app. Answers common patient questions about maternity care, schedules appointments and provides reminders about pregnancy care. It also tailors conversations to the patient by remembering past interactions and learning their communication preferences. Additionally, if he identifies a problem with the patient, he will escalate it so that Millie’s clinicians can provide timely care.
“Maia is a natural extension of our core mission of providing better maternity care through a more comprehensive, proactive, right-sized model that eliminates unnecessary stress and friction in the patient journey. … Often, women are left without sufficient support during pregnancy – Maia aims to erase this narrative,” Anu Sharma, founder and CEO of Millie, said in an email. “Harnessing the next generation of personalized, ongoing maternity support, built around patient safety, data privacy and clinical quality.”
Maia builds on some of Millie’s existing capabilities, such as 24/7 calling, ambient temperature mapping, app-based health screenings and connected blood pressure cuffs, Sharma added.
The launch of this tool comes as the United States faces a maternal health crisis. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country. The United States is also experiencing significant OBGYN provider shortages and Medicaid cuts, which are exacerbating the problems.
By introducing Maia, Millie aims to make a difference in the face of these challenges.
“Our goal with Maia and AI more generally is twofold: to create a better model of patient-provider interaction so that care is more empathetic and seamless. [and] to give our clinical and operational teams more real-time information in a way that integrates with their workflows, so they can better support patients,” Sharma said.
This announcement comes shortly after Millie launched a perimenopause and menopause program in September. It provides access to hormone therapy, non-hormonal medications, vaginal treatments and lifestyle strategies to relieve symptoms.
Millie is not the only maternal health clinic. Companies that offer similar services include Pomelo Care, Mae and Maven Clinic.
