Rory McILroy is underway in December.

On Tuesday, McILroy confirmed information that he had agreed to make the headlines for the Male Australian Open for the next two years on the Melbourne sand belt. The tournament, which has Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and more recently Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott among his champions, is scheduled from December 4 to 7 in Royal Melbourne and the following year at Kingston Heath. Both are classified as the best routes in the world by golfweek assessors.

The last time the 35 -year -old Irishman played in the Australian Open was in 2014 when McILroy defended the Stonehaven Cup the year after his support with Scott in 2013 to finally be crowned champion.

“I am proud to get involved in the Australian Open for the next two years, especially with playing on the world’s world -class sandy belt, somewhere that I always wanted to play professionally,” said McILroy in a statement.

“The success of the Australian Open is important for the world game, and I am incredibly confident that he will prosperate again this year, in particular with the staging in one of the big sports cities in the world and on two of the best golf courses in the world in the next two years: the Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.”

Golf CEO Australia James Sutherland said the appearance of Northern Irish people would help raise the status of the tournament.

“Rory McILroy, one of the best to play our game, playing on the world -renowned Melbourne sand belt, is an enticing proposal for golf fans,” said Sutherland. “We are committed to raising the status of our national championship, and this announcement is an important step in this direction.”
