If you’re as old as me, you’ll remember the magic of the first wave of Pokémania that hit the West in the late 90s. Destined Rivals brings back the nostalgic feel of Pokémon Gold and Silver to the Game Boy Color, alongside Wizards of the Coast’s epic era of the Pokémon TCG, particularly Gym Heroes.

Serving as the sixth expansion for the Pokémon TCG, Gym Heroes introduced the Pokémon Trainer and breathed new life into the game. Now imagine mixing that with the darker artwork from the fifth Pokémon TCG set, Team Rocket, and reworking it into a modern-era version. Enter the destined rivals.

Instead of Dark Pokémon this time around, we get Team Rocket Trainer Pokémon (though, Team Rocket’s Mewtwo SIR), as well as appearances from Gold and Silver protagonist Ethan and Diamond and Pearl’s Pokémon League Champion Cynthia.

While not the most valuable card in the set, Ethan’s Typhlosion – 190/182 Illustration Rare is a huge highlight for me. Artist GIDORA perfectly captured what was happening in my imagination while playing Pokémon Gold and Silver. It’s such a great feeling to connect with a work of art like this, and it forms a central part of my personal collection.

The Best Pursuit Cards You Can Pull From Destined Rivals

Mining booster packs is great, but if you’re looking for the high-end cards, it’s going to cost you. You might get lucky and pull an SIR out of a blister pack of three like this, but the chances are incredibly low. Once I’ve finished opening a booster box for an expansion, if I haven’t pulled out the card I’m looking for, I’ll take a look at TCGplayer and see what it’s for. More often than not, the card you want will be cheaper than buying a few booster packs or a boatload of booster packs.
