MEN IN BLACK Sequel Officially Moving Forward at Sony; Will Smith plans to return as Agent Jay
After successfully breathing new life into the Bad boys franchise, Sony Pictures has shifted its attention to the Men in black.
According to Deadline, the studio is developing a new MIB film (looks like it will be a sequel rather than a full reboot), with Bad boys for life writer Chris Bremner on board to pen the script.
Although no talent is attached yet, the report notes that “once Bremner completes the script, original series star Will Smith would be one of the first to receive it in hopes of reprising the role of Agent Jay.”
It’s unclear whether Smith would play the lead role or take on more of a mentor role for a new group of characters, but Deadline seems pretty sure the plan is to include Jay in the first version.
Smith actually hinted that he might be interested in donning the black suit and sunglasses again earlier this year.
“I told myself I was done with sequels. I was like, ‘I’ve done enough sequels. I have new things I want to do,'” he said. “Literally this morning, an hour before I came here, they just threw the bag in for another Men in Black. I was like, ‘Ah, I’m supposed to go on tour this summer!'”
“Sony is determined to fix the flaws in Men in Black: International” a recent Insider Fandom report requested. “After the debacle of the 2019 film, Sony learned its lesson and now wants to bring in Will Smith for the next film. Executives believe that excluding Will Smith was one of the main reasons for the poor response to the last film.”
1997s Men in black was a major critical and commercial success, and although the next two sequels did quite well from a box office perspective, reviews were not as favorable. The 2019 relaunch with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, Men in Black: Internationalperformed fairly well, but was widely considered a disappointment due to poor reviews.
