“Maybe… I’ll never say never again”

Hugh Jackman officially retired (or so we thought) as Wolverine after James Mangold’s. Loganbut the actor was convinced to don the claws and mutton chops again to team up with Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth in Marvel Studios’ R-rated blockbuster, Deadpool and Wolverine.
The 2024 film was widely thought to be Jackman’s. real swan song as the fan-favorite mutant hero, but rumors persist that he will be back for Avengers: Apocalypse and/or Avengers: Secret Warsand we’ve also heard that he might be part of Reynolds’ untitled Project X (perhaps a new version of X-Force).
Jackman’s name wasn’t announced as part of the big “chair reveal,” but we’d be very surprised if he didn’t appear in Secret Warsat least. When asked about Logan’s potential retaliation during an appearance on the Graham Norton Showthe actor hinted, but did not confirm his return.
“Maybe. I’ll never say ‘never’ again! I’ve done ten movies now, so I think they’ve got enough for an AI version of me.”
Although Jackman was clearly joking with the AI remark, the concept probably isn’t that far-fetched. Over the past week, we’ve seen plenty of AI-generated images flooding the internet, and many of them are pretty compelling, including this “leaked” BTS photo of Jackman alongside Tobey Maguire, Pedro Pascal, and co-director Joe Russo.

There’s a lot of speculation that Jackman’s Wolverine will eventually join the new X-Men roster as the MCU’s Mutant saga progresses. Although new actors will almost certainly take on most of the roles, introducing a new, younger version of a character like Logan – especially when they’ve become synonymous with a particular actor over the past 25 years – is going to be a tricky prospect for Marvel/Disney, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Jackman (and perhaps some of the other OG actors from 20th Century Fox expected to return for doomsday) remain in mentoring roles.
Would you be happy to see Jackman continue playing Wolverine over the next few years?
Avengers: Apocalypse And Avengers: Secret Wars have recently experienced significant delays, with doomsday is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.
Both films will be directed by the Russo brothers, who are also returning to the MCU after directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: Endgame.
“Being able to create stories and explore characters from the Marvel Universe has fulfilled a lifelong dream of ours, and we have discovered a powerful connection with audiences in every film we have made. We are thrilled to once again collaborate with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to take this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for fans and ourselves,” said The Russo in a statement after the SDCC panel.
