Oliver Glasner says that Crystal Palace “must keep” Marc Guehi after Liverpool made a late offer for his captain.
Guehi started the Crystal Palace match against Aston Villa as a captain on Sunday, marking a sublime curling effort in his team’s 3-0 victory at Villa Park.
Liverpool made an improved offer worth 35 million pounds Sterling for Guehi on Saturday which included a 10%sales clause. Palace would be willing to accept 35 million pounds sterling plus 5 million pounds sterling in additional modules, but also wanted a replacement by the door.
However, Glasner clearly explained his feelings with regard to what Palace should do after the victory at Villa after reiterating that the club will have the last word on a potential outing for Guehi.
“There is no agreement,” Glasner told her post-match press conference at Villa Park. “We can decide, he is our player and under contract. We can decide. It’s up to us.
“The only one to decide if Marc has to stay is our president.
“Our fans deserve to have the best available players. If we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He likes Crystal Palace and the team.”
Glasner continued: “We must [keep Guehi] If we want to play a successful season.
“We had a fantastic start, undefeated during these six games, winning the community shield. The number two goal was to qualify for the group phase of the conference league and we did it. I told the players that it was a good start, for an excellent start, we have to win here and that’s what the players did.
“But it’s just a start. The first step is made. And to play a successful season, we need Marc.
“It is not possible in one day to find the replacement which can play immediately in the Premier League.
“We have to keep it. I told the president. It’s not for me.
“I like Marc, he’s such a professional player, and he’s such a nice guy but it’s for the future of Crystal Palace, it’s to play a successful season. We have to keep him. We have talked about this situation and say, OK, we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement. If we don’t have the right replacement for me, it’s clear to keep it.”
Joe Gomez has taken discussions between clubs, but Liverpool will not allow him to go on loan and would be reluctant to sell it. The 28-year-old appeared in the 1-0 Liverpool victory against Arsenal on Sunday.
