The future of Marc Guehi in Crystal Palace has been thrown into a new uncertainty, with reports suggesting that the English international had declared to the club that he did not intend to renew his contract.

The 25 -year -old central defender is now preparing to make the end of the last year of his agreement at Selhurst Park and to leave as a free agent next summer.

The news comes after a last dramatic day of the transfer window in which Guehi seemed to be on the brink of a dream move to Liverpool.

Marc Guehi failed to seal a move to Liverpool

The Reds, eager to strengthen their background line, submitted a late offer which was initially accepted by the president of the palace, Steve Parish. Guehi had even completed the first step in his doctor and a transaction sheet was submitted before the 19 hour deadline, putting the switch at a sidelines.

However, the director of the Palais Oliver Glasner intervened decisively. With a short time to guarantee a replacement, Glasner would have threatened to resign if his star defender was authorized to leave.

Faced with the risk of losing your manager as well as his pending captain, the parish canceled his decision and managed the transfer a few hours before closing the window.

Palace may have kept it for the moment, but the long-term consequences of their decision seem more and more dark. Unless the circumstances change spectacularly, Guehi will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January.

Liverpool could revisit the situation of Guehi in the winter window or wait for it to be available on a free transfer next summer.

Meanwhile, Palace faces the intimidating prospect of losing a key player without receiving transfer fees, a situation that will exert additional pressure on Glasner and the club hierarchy in the coming months.
