Manager that Thierry Henry described as a “genius” worth joining Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers have “spoken” to Erik ten Hag’s representatives about their vacant managerial role and his position on the job has now been made clear.

After 10 games in the Premier League this season, Wolves have acquired two points from 30 available. Winless in those matches, Vitor Pereira was sacked following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham, despite the Portuguese having signed a new contract a few weeks earlier.

Wolves will no doubt be hoping to quickly make an appointment to replace Pereira. The Old Gold have an interim manager in place for their match against Chelsea in James Collins, as they consider a wide range of options to succeed Pereira.

Middlesbrough head coach Rob Edwards appears to be Wolves’ main target, although Boro are reluctant to let Edwards, who only joined in the summer, leave for Molineux, where he spent time as a manager and player.

According to Football Insider, however, the club appear interested in bringing one manager in particular back to the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag open to Wolves role

Recent reports have indicated that not only have Wolves spoken with ten of Hag’s representatives, but that the Dutchman is said to be “interested in speaking to Wolves about the job.”

A Premier League regular, Ten Hag left Ajax for Manchester United in 2022. Over the next two years, he won the EFL Cup and FA Cup, but struggled to achieve consistent success in domestic and European football.

Sacked in 2024, ten Hag spent almost a year without a job before being hired by Bayer Leverkusen to replace Xabi Alonso in the summer of 2025. After managing only three matches for the German team, ten Hag was however sacked and remains a free agent.

Even though the last few seasons haven’t been the kindest for Ten Hag, he remains a well-regarded coach. Thierry Henry, according to Manchester Evening News, has spoken positively about the Dutchman in the past.

“I’ll be honest, I’m a big fan of Ten Hag and I really like him. He’s the trainer I recommended to [club president, Joan] Laporta after Koeman’s dismissal at Barça. He’s a genius.”

Wolves’ next manager is set to get off to a quick start at Molineux, due to the club’s current difficult situation in the Championship. As someone ‘firmly in contention’, Ten Hag would certainly be a bold appointment, given the misfortunes he suffered at the end of his tenure at Man United and Leverkusen.
