Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner died on July 20, 2025, while on vacation at Costa Rica. He was swimming off the coast when he was caught in a riptide and pulled under the waves. He was 54 years old.
Warner is perhaps best known for playing Theo Huxtable, the irascible adolescent, well-intentioned, but subject to errors on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, a role he resumed in programs like “a different world” and on a special television of the notable land in 1990. Warner was one of the main characters in the short-term drama “here and now” in 1992 Kids Anthology “CBS Storybreak” in 1993 and 1994. He played the producer on “The Magic School Bus” from 1994 to 1997.
Warner has never taken a break, and although Theo Huxable was a relatable and energetic character, Warner was an actor and actor of considerable strength, acting in sitcoms and dramas with an equal component. From 1996 to 2000, he and his co-star Eddie Griffin played fictitious interpretations of themselves on the “Malcolm and Eddie” of the UPN, a series which ran 89 episodes during his four seasons. The characters of Malcolm and Eddie were lucky in a large sum of money and bought a pub they would operate together, learning to be business owners on their feet. Warner and Griffin were nominated for the NAACP Image Awards for the series.
And it ended 25 years ago. Warner’s roles and career continued. For example, few people know that Warner was nominated for two grammys, winning one in 2015 for his vocal performance on the song “Jesus Children”. He won for the best traditional R&B performance. “”
Malcolm Jamal-Warner has never stopped working
While his heritage was cemented by the popularity of “The Cosby Show” when he was still a teenager, Warner never stopped jostling and never rested on his laurels. He appeared in genre shows like “Sliders”, “Static Shock” (currently being restarted) and “Stripperrella”, but also successful successes as “Dexter” and “Community”. On “Community”, he played André, Shirley’s husband (Yvette Nicole Brown), away, (Yvette Nicole Brown). He was a main player in the short -term sitcom of Sherri Shepherd “Sherri”, and one of the main characters in the BET 2011 series “Reed Between the Lines”. He played one of the titular reeds alongside Tracee Ellis Ross, who played his wife.
Warner got there, and you’ve probably seen him appear in your favorite show. He was in three episodes of “American Horror Story” (Freak Show season) and played a character named Sticky in three episodes of “Sons of Anarchy”. He played a recurring role in the series of beds on “Suits” and presented himself several times in the series of first -rate videos “Sneaky Pete” in 2015. It was at this time that he recorded “Jesus Children” and was prepared for this victory of a Grammy. Warner released his first album, A Jazz and Poetry Odyssey, “The Miles Long Mixtape” in 2003. He released three other more records. His most recent, “Care in Plain View”, was released in 2022.
Warner also began directing in 2018, taking charge of an episode of “The Resident”, another series that welcomed it as part of the regular ensemble. “White Famous”, “Grown-ish”, “The Wonder Years”. He did everything.
Warner’s most recent role was to play Amir in the successful program “9-1-1”. And he intended to continue his work. In 2024, he had just launched (with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley) the podcast “Not all hood (Nah)”, which was all about the black experience in America.
Warner’s prolific and active career has been interrupted by a tragic accident. Fortunately, we have a lot of great Warner performances to catch up.
