DB & WG – an iconoclastic pair

Peter Kettle |
We rarely publish poetry, although PK sent us this reflection on two of the largest cricket icons, WG Grace and DG Bradman. We thought you could appreciate something different.
DB rather than Don Bradman,
Add Flair, don’t you think?
He differentiates this unconventional, creative and high speed scorer from
Mass of other high -level players.
The one Marylebone Cricket Club has twice prevented his presidency.
“DB” rightly puts him
an acknowledgment of receipt by
With this just as dominant figure of its own era, WG –
Dr William Gilbert Grace –
the greatest influence on
The emergence of modern game.
“The Don” – Unlike “DB” –
is sober and respectful of style.
He himself fell ill at the head of such a deferential treatment.
This new handle, I’m sure
He warmly approved –
A term of affection
in the market.
It could start a universal trend –
have members of the MCC, in the two hemispheres,
Maping “DB” between the Overs,
And schoolchildren never hear
Another thing – “Bradman”, who is it?
Even the lady of tea pavilion who becomes chummy with “dB”. Soon feels
She knows him intimately.
And, yes, db-wg a rhyme verse!
I plan photos of the pair side by side
On cereal packages and plane logos:
– Certainly on the socks of the Prime Ministers
-Maybe even on rainbows
