Lucasfilm is taking ROGUE SQUADRON back to the drawing board…and it’s not going to theaters

Lucasfilm has announced plans for a new Star Wars film titled Squad of Thieves in December 2020. The news was accompanied by an elaborate promotional video that saw filmmaker Patty Jenkins walking on a runway before boarding a life-size X-Wing.
We would later learn that Jenkins had been forced to postpone work on the project due to a vague scheduling conflict. For a time it seemed that Squad of Thieves could come later Wonder Woman 3 Or Cleopatra (both of which were abandoned), and the Star Wars The spinoff has been in limbo for a while now.
The film was shelved in 2022 and was reportedly dropped the following year. Squad of Thieves was later put back into active development, but remains undated and does not appear to be a priority. Instead, the spotlight turned to Shawn Levy. Star Wars: Starfighter.
As first reported on SFFGazette.com, we might finally get an update on the long-gestating project, courtesy of scooper @MyTimeToShineH. Apparently, Squad of Thieves is now being developed as a television series, suggesting that Lucasfilm has abandoned the idea of making it into a film.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy previously indicated that Squad of Thieves could be redeveloped into a TV series, so this news doesn’t come as a huge shock.
The studio has not announced any big screen projects Star Wars projects, although several projects are at different stages of development. It remains to be seen how many of them – including those officially announced – will come to fruition. Squad of Thieves definitely has potential as a series. What that would mean for Jenkins’ involvement is another big question right now.
“So when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I’d come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3.” Jenkins said last March. “So we made a deal to make that happen, we made a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman. When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we have to finish this deal.’ We closed the deal just as the strike was breaking out. »
“So now I owe a draft of Star Wars, and so we’ll see what happens there. You know, who knows?” she continued. “It’s hard, they’ve got a hard job ahead of them, figuring out what’s the first movie they’re going to make. They’ve got other directors that have been working, but now, you know, I’m back on Rogue Squadron, and we’ll see what happens. We have to develop it, you know, get it to where we’re both very happy with it.”
Squad of Thieves has previously been described as introducing “A new generation of starfighter pilots earning their wings and risking their lives in a high-speed, high-speed adventure that pushes the limits.” Ahsoka Season 2 is currently the only Star Wars TV Series Confirmed to Launch on Disney+, So Get Squad of Thieves ready for release in 2027 would surely benefit the streamer.
However, like so many movies and TV shows set in a galaxy far, far away, we wouldn’t necessarily be banking on this one happening, given the troubled half-decade it’s had since it was first announced.
Do you think Squad of Thieves will it eventually see the light of day on the big or small screen?
