As This: Welcome to DerryThe latest episode of, “In the Name of the Father”, begins, tensions are high between Lilly and Ronnie. The latter’s father, Hank, is now hiding in the isolated tavern established by Dick Hallorann, whose ability to see the dead returned after his encounter with Pennywise.
The big reveal of this episode comes when we learn that Ingrid, head of housekeeping at Juniper Hill Asylum and friend of Lilly, turns out to be the daughter of the man on whom “It” based its character of Pennywise. Ingrid’s father was a carnival performer who called himself “Pennywise the Dancing Clown”, and the similarities between them are striking.
However, when he was “taken away” from Ingrid, she remained in Derry and found employment at Juniper Hill. When one of the children at the asylum told her that a clown was talking to him through the pipes, Ingrid took him to the basement and Pennywise appeared before them.
Ingrid thinks she sees her father, but flees when he tries to eat the child. Unfortunately, she accidentally locks the girl in the basement with the entity, which eats her before impersonating Ingrid’s father (in his “human” form of Bob Gray).
He encourages Ingrid to “open the door and let me in”, and she has since become convinced that Pennywise is her father, even if he has somehow been transformed into something monstrous. She hopes to find her father and reveals that she was the one in the cemetery that night, dressed as Pennywise, thanks to her father’s old costume and makeup.
Believing she could free her father, Ingrid continued to take children from him and wants to do the same with Lilly, believing that this would somehow bring her father back. Lilly flees as an angry crowd converges on the bar, under the dark influence of Pennywise and eager to bring Hank to justice.
As for Ingrid, she once again dons the Pennywise costume and makeup!
Heading into the final two episodes, we don’t yet know why Pennywise decided to base his appearance on Ingrid’s father. Perhaps he understood that it was a good way to attract children? Either way, we’d bet on answers coming our way over the next few weeks.
